My plan is for 1000 N&W minutes a month, with 250 anytime minutes also, for 29.99. I went 106 minutes over and it cost me around 60 bucks. :( there isn't anything i can do about it, is there? How does everyone else keep track of their minutes, I don't want to go over again!

Don't go over your allotted minutes.

Cut yer yappin! My phone (I guess most) has a call log with a timer that keeps tab of all calls ever made on the phone, so if you record that at the beginning of each month you can check back to keep an eye on it.

Any way to avoid it? Yep, change your plan and increase your allotted anytime minutes.

My husband did that once, he called one of his friends that was staying in the room across the hall in the hotel. He was too lazy to go over and talk to him so he used his cell phone. Sometimes that man is just braindead!;)

Which cell phone provider do you have?

VoiceStream Wireless gives me
600 weekday anytime free long distance free roaming minutes
UNLIMITED weekend anytime free long distance free roaming minutes

all for only $39.99 per month

<--- Should get paid to pimp VoiceStream on ATOT, watch out Jamie Lee Curtis (is she still hot?)!

I think he has AT&T Digital Advantage... I have the Regional Advantage. My parents have Voicestream and since they never use their phones I eat up there N&W minutes, but for some reason I think VS signal quality is suck.

First month I had my cell phone my bill was $170! That is rather high especially when my monthly rate is $40 a month for 400 minutes, 2000 N&W, and 1000 MtoM a month.....I learned my lesson right quick.

That is unfortunate for VoiceStream, their signal strength and call quality seems to vary across the USA. Fortunately in the Portland, Oregon metro area it's just as good as the "big boys" (Sprint PCS, Verizon, Cingular, AT&T, Nextel, etc.).

I have AT&T Digital Advantage. :)

The signal is waaaay better than VoiceStream, the customer support is waaay better than VoiceStream. I pay $49.99 a month for 600 anytime minutes and unlimited NIGHTS and weekends. :)

So far I haven't gone over. I used to go over a lot. But not anymore. :)

Another case of the absurdity of cell-phone plans.

When will they make the "Cheapest rate possible for any damn call you make" plan?

Damn that's a good deal for a major carrier. A few questions about your plan though:
1) Do you get free long distance weekdays and/or weekends?
2) Do you get free roaming anywhere weekdays and/or weekends?
3) Do you get free unlimited AT&T cell to AT&T cell calls?

Even if AT&T offered the best thing since edible panties I wouldn't be able to switch since I signed away my life for a year to VoiceStream ...

The reason that they don't just charge .10-20 cents a minute (probably what it costs them anyways) is that with that, people would be way more conscious about their usage. My plan with Cingular $30/month, includes 250 anytime and unlimited nights & weekends. $30/250 minutes is $.12/minute during the weekdays. If they were actually charging me $.12/min, do you think I would use it as much as I do? No, if I was in my school parking lot, I'd go inside and use the free phone..but since I'm paying for it already, I just go ahead and use it.If you don't use as many minutes as you pay for, they are getting you that way - if you use more than that, they nail you at around $.45/min.

Do you think its cheap to run a cell phone service? My uncle has a tower on one of his properties, and just rent on the tower, they pay him $1000/month. Not to mention the actual cost of the equipment, the data lines running to and from the tower, the maintence...and each company must have lots of towers, with plenty of open call capacity, or people will bitch and they will loose customers. They are also loosing money on the cell phone cost. I think its a bargain that I'm getting.

And people from Europe/Asia who get it for $.05/min, with better signal reception/technologies and no plan - lucky them, but you have to remember that the surface area is much smaller and there is not as much competition (gov mandates standards, so they dont have towers of TDMA/CDMAGSM//AMPS all in one area).

my provider is At&T wireless (digital advantage or whatever i think). As far as I know, I can only check my minutes on a monthly basis online; that is, when I get my bill (I can view my bill online, but thats still on a monthly basis).

I'm pretty "lazy" too, like when I'm home, and people call my cell, I just talked to them through my cell; even worse, I call people through my cell when I'm at home too. The latter doesn't happen too often though.

Anymore horror stories about cell phone bill? :p Maybe it'll make me feel better about my stupidity. blah

Oh yeah, that $30/month also includes caller ID, call waiting, 3-way calling...and VM for an additional $2/month. Landlines dont come close - and this is pretty much anywhere!

My billing cycle ended yesterday and I have a very bad feeling about how much I went over my time limit.
