Other than price, what's the difference between a GTX670 vs GTX680?

I was wondering because I was considering buying one, even though I don't really need it.

If I do buy, then I'll still be keeping my evga 560 Ti 2GB in my system, because the 275 drivers were better in some ways than the latest ones.

Differences that would matter the most to me are:
zixel (D32F) fill rate (is it halved for the GTX670?);
clock speeds;
thermal characteristics;
power connectors required;
DX11.0 vs. DX11.1
number of TA/TF units

As long as the GTX670 has at least 2/3 shader performance of the GTX680, then that's fine.

Also possibly a worse reference PCB on the 670 depending on the model, but there are so many models out there it's hard to generalize too much.

I run a Vanilla 670 and it performs pretty decently

if the gtx670 only had 2/3 of the performance of the gtx670 then it would be a turd. clock for clock the 680 is only about 5% faster. I most certainly would not get a dinky reference gtx670 though.

With the variety of GTX 670s now out I would probably have bought one instead of the GTX 680. At the time I upgraded from the 6970, only the GTX 680 was out.

Yeah, there's hardly any difference between them, performance wise. I'll 3rd the recommendation of not getting the reference board and go with one that has a 680 PCB. The FTW model uses the full sized PCB.

XBitLabs has just put up a very detailed review of the GTX670, with full analysis of the reference cooler and its noise profile compared to the GTX680:
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/graphics/display/geforce-gtx-670_2.html#sect0

Quote: "The reference GeForce GTX 670 is no quieter than the GeForce GTX 680. Moreover, the cooling system of our sample changes its fan speed inconsistently as is indicated by the wavy shape of its noise graph. The cheap plastic of the cooler casing and of the PCB extension with fan resonates, causing even more discomfort. Unfortunately, the GeForce GTX 670 is unsatisfactory in this test."

This pretty much confirms what I've found with my reference cooler (two of them actually, after an RMA). I'm in the step-up line for a 680. My loss for jumping the gun on launch day...but hopefully others learned from my mistake... :)

I knew all this more or less, before I bought my reference MSI GTX 670. However, I had a problem, my GTX 570 was broken and I needed a new card. Since I have a Cooler master Storm Scout, both the ASUS Direct CU II And Gigabyte Triple Winforce GTX 670's was simply too long to fit in my case. Gainward Phantom and Zotac AMP edition would have fitted, however, they where not in stock at the time.

What I didn't know was that the resonance sound from the plastic housing containing the fan made such an humming noise. Even in Idle it was very, very annoying. And could be heard from the other room.

However, I have since bought myself a Arctic Accelero Twin Turbo II which cools this reference card to half the temps of the stock cooler, and dead silent.

My only complaint is that this card has some coil whine. But from my understanding this is luck of the draw. I've even seen Gigabyte Windforce GTX 670's (Custom PCB) and GTX 680's with coil whine, with a google search. So I guess I have to live with this.

The 670 windforce I owned briefly had a buzz sound to it. It was driving me crazy. It was a fantastic card otherwise.
I just bought a gtx 460 1GB for $85 and returned the windforce. I'll get another one when they are in the $250 price range.

The only time I've had coil whine was at very high clocks and very high FPS, which came in a 3dMark11 benchmark. If you're getting whine in games, you might want to try Adaptive vsync to limit the overly high FPS scenarios.

Wow - I didn't know you were having problems too. Was it coil whine or fan noise? Looks like this upgrade cycle was a bit of a bust for you (and far from perfect for many of us).

It was definitely some fan buzz. I loved the 670 but I wrecked my mustang and the $400 gpu was the first thing to go. When the mustang gets fixed I'll probably snag another 670. My mustang was flat out awesome. Cobra motor, 3.73 gears, full stainless exhaust,etc.. The 670 is an awesome card. Loved it. Love that American muscle and sweet exhaust note more though.

Good luck getting that mustang put back together. Sounds like a sweet ride. New GPUs will always be there if you need them...

Weak. With the dohc you need 4.10s ;)

I would have easily bought the GTX 670, the extra $100 for the 680 is just not worth it for the 1-2 fps difference, I was actually pissed when i seen the benchmarks of the GTX 670, if you overclock it then it beats a stock GTX 680

Who me? lol. I have gpu ocd or something. Weird because its the only part I do it to. I ran a i7 920 for over 2 years and plan on running my 2600k for a few years.

At one point I went from a X1800XT -> X1900XT -> 7600GT -> 7900GT -> 7900GS -> 7950GT.

From the 7600 on, it was all bought used, but still... I don't know what overcame me then. Since then I've gone 8800GT -> G92 8800GTS -> GTX 260 -> HD 6950 -> GTX 480 -> GTX 670. So I've gotten a little bit better...

And all in that time as far as CPUs I've gone E6600 -> Q6600 -> 2500K -> 2600K. So 12 GPUs to 4 CPUs... I plan on keeping the 2600K for a long time as well.
