**IBM**
T40/T41
X31/X40(When Available)

If those are out of your target price.
Check out some of the Fujitsu ones, they make some pretty nice machines.

i would compare all ibm machines to dell latitudes, not inspirons.
vendors such as compaq/hp should compare to dell, because ibm are all business, literally.

The IBM ThinkPad T series is generally comparable to the Dell Latitudes (both are targeted towards the corporate workspace and both lines use magnesium alloy and other advanced materials).

The ThinkPad R series (except for the R50p) is aimed more at the home/small business segment. The ThinkPad R40 is probably what you would want to compare to a 600m.

Edit: The R40 is pretty bulky compared to the 600m, but it has a much more solid feel to it than the 600m, and it has a far superior keyboard and dual pointing device. The 600m's edge is in graphics. The weakest Radeon 9000 in the 600m will trounce the Radeon 7500 in the R40.

yep, thats the only problem with ibm, besides graphics.
if you want a mid-range with matching price, get a dell or compaq/hp.
you will notice the degradation in quality if you have owned an ibm before, though.
