OTA HD Tuner Box

Hello AV forums.

I canceled my cable (FU cable company) and want to see what I can get in HD over the air. I've looked around a bit for the tuner boxes but at the local asian computer stores but all the choices seem to be so weird. I am concerned they are trash.

Is there one box that is the agreed upon box to get? Or a few well known good value for money choices?

Help appreciated.

Thanks.

If you just want a tuner, the Samsung is one of the few out there that actually outputs HD.

There are of course the monthly fee TiVo and the no-Fee Dish Network HD DVR's that will tune and record.

Not a high demand for these as all of the TV's since 2006 have been required to have a HD tuner in them...maybe a good excuse to upgrade your HDTV....

FYI, I have only been using OTA digital signals for the past 3 years and won't go back to cable anytime soon.

Bummer. I'm too cheap to buy a new TV. This one cost me almost 3 grand in 2002! My previous TV was from 1980 or something. Perhaps in 2018 I will buy one. Until then I will look into this samsung thing. I also noticed this epvision one that looks like it does just about everything.

I was going to go the Dish's DTVPal DVR because of its two HD tuners and 0 fees. However, the time-based recording really turned me off (i.e. the recording works like a VCR in that it records whatever show is on Fox from 7-8 on Tuesdays instead of recording American Idol whenever it airs). For about $50 more I built an HTPC, which is much more versatile and provides me with a ton of online content in addition to my local OTA programming.
