I have built a HTPC with the following configuration:

Chassis: IBM NetVista 8303
Motherboard: IBM/Intel 845 Chipset
Processor: Intel Pentium 4 - 3.06GHz (533MHz, 512KB, 478)
Memory: 2GB DDR266 (2 x 1GB)
Hard Drive: IBM/Hitachi DeskStar 500GB (7200RPM, IDE)
Graphics: ASUS/ATI Radeon HD 3450 (AGP 4x, 512MB, DirectX 10.1)
TV Tuner 1: Visiontek/ATI TV Wonder HD 650 (PCI) – Connected to Comcast Analogue Cable
TV Tuner 2: Visiontek/ATI TV Wonder HD 650 (PCI) – Connected to Terk Amplified HDTV Antenna
Networking: Linksys WMP55AG (Dual-Band Wireless A+G PCI Adapter)
Sound: Motherboard Intel AC’97 controller with two-channel sound
Monitor: SOYO 24” (1200 x 1920)
Operating System: Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit

I know, this is a legacy system. I have my reasons for going with this combo. It works great. My problem:

The second TV Tuner attached to the Terk Amplified HDTV antenna works with Windows Media Center in tuning all the free local OTA channels, but the Intel AC’97 controller cannot output the sound from the HD stream, so I can only see the HD video.

I know that the problem is with the codecs for/in the Intel AC’97 controller because:
1. When I connect my cell phone earpiece to the computer via Bluetooth, it plays the sound for the HD video.
2. I tested the cable input on both the tuners, and the sound plays fine for SD analogue cable content.
3. Initially I had only one tuner and the other PCI slot had a Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi Extreme Gamer sound card. It could play the sound from the antenna HD streams just fine.

I would appreciate it if someone could guide me as to how to get a codec to play the HDTV sound stream through the AC’97 controller. According to the Intel website (http://www.intel.com/design/chipsets/embedded/273656.htm), the AC’97 controller is capable of six-channel sound. So I don't understand why it is having this problem in Vista (the AC’97 driver came pre-installed with Vista).

Thank you very much.

The drivers that came with Vista are the most basic set of drivers. So you may be missing out on some features. Due to the age of the system and audio controler your going to have a difficult time finding drivers that give you full support in Vista. If you where running XP this wouldn't be an issue. Maybe you'll get lucky and find some drivers that someone has programmed on there own that will work. But your best solution may be a sound card or USB sound device. Like one of these.
