OT - XP Home or Pro

For a home machine, DSL always on, always sitting there running SETI, used for lots of gaming (including hosting games). Should I get XP Home or Pro?

I don't think it'd make any difference as far as SETI times or gaming. So I'd go with the cheaper of the two. (home)😉

You will only need Pro over Home if you:

1) Are joining a domain
2) Have a dual CPU system

That said, go for Home, and spend a little more on more/faster system for DC projects 😉 Alternatively, save the money and go enjoy RL for a while, take your GF out, catch a movie or something, and leave your computer to crunch! 😉

GF? Giga-something, maybe? Sorry, I'm not up on all the acronyms you experts use.

Uhm, GF = Girl Friend, you know, those computer-money sucking things that demand attention all the time.

Uhm, oh yeah, good point....😱

😉

Garry <----- hopes GF doesn't see this!

for the use of cracking SETI makes no difference at all... i think home takes a little less of a footprint but not by too too much. whatever you have... install that. 😛

Doesn't XP Home have a limit to the number of simultanious connection allowed? Might make a difference for hosting games but I think the limit is 10 simultanious connections.

That will be connections to the TCP/IP stack in regards to file serving, running IIS etc. Connecting to a game server will not affect that, I have had one of my friends with Home host a LAN server for CS with 12 people connecting to it, and it's been fine 🙂
