OT - Why VW sucks...

I know I haven't been as active in the forum lately but I have an excuse. The reason is in the past 3 days the windows on my VW GTI GLX have dropped inside the doors 2 times. It happened once before and I thought it just a freak incident. Well, it happened again 3 days ago and that made me wonder. I did some reseach and found that this is a very common problem in VW cars. I've only owned the car 18 months and this is the 3rd "window drop". I'm not going to waste everyone's time on the details but I'd just like to warn any prospective car buyers... Beware of new VW's. There's a known defect in the power window design and apparently VW is not doing anything about it.

If you want to read more go to HERE and do a search for "window" and you'll see what I mean...

Okay, I know I'm venting but the reason is I'm pissed because this is the 3rd time my window has fallen inside my door in 18 months and the 2nd time in 3 days. Last night was on a date and it rained! :| GRRRRRRRRRR... Well, the good news is we have Lemon Law in FL and this is their 3rd attempt at fixing the problem. I called the FL LL office today and they told me that if this fix fails I can notify VW about the problem and that's their final chance to solve the problem before having to replace the car or come up with a cash amount.

BTW - I'm *not* one of those a-hole car owners who hates a car no matter what. My GTI is actually a pretty sweet ride but considering the amount I'm paying I don't think VW should be deeking me (and others) around with a known defect.

Maybe this should've been started in OT or be moved there but I rarely venture out of the "safe" waters of the DC forum. 😉

Good to know as they were one of my considerations for a new vehicle next year.

Guess I'll go shop somewhere else.

My husband is a real fan of the diesel VWs, but he is constantly plagued by door/door lock problems. It's an older car though, I hope you can get your new one fixed properly.

That's a cool ride you have there. I was an inch close to getting one myself. Tried it, loved it but didn't work out at last due to the a-hole salesperson. How much did you pay for yours?

A couple of my friends are driving 99.5+ VWs but this is actually the first time I heard of such a problem.

do you have to take apart the door to get it out or something? somehow i wouldn't think that the motor would let it slide like that... from what i know of power windows i would think its a pretty simple thing to fix, its either the motor doing something wrong or the wheel isn't "grippy" enough to hold onto the window.

According to the service guy at my dealer it's a plastic clip breaking that causes the window to fall into the door. My car is still under warranty but it's still a PITA when I can't roll the window up. I live in FL and it gets hot in August and we've been getting rain recently. Also, it's kinda worthless to lock the car when the window is wide open.

Another thing that bothers me is VW's standard "bumper to bumper" warranty is 2 years or 24K miles and even though this is a known defect some VW dealers are charging customers for this repair after that period. I read a few threads over at VWVortex where people were being charged several hundred dollars to fix their failed windows. I think that's just wrong. Drivers wanted? Yeah, right...

EDIT: BTW, if your window drops in your door after your warranty has expired I'm told you can still call VW Of America and get it repaired free of charge. Like I said, this is a known defect and VW will work with your dealer to cover the repair.
