OT: Which project(s) and why?

Another thread got me thinking about this. I'm curious which project(s) you run and why.

I triple-boot with:
ChessBrain because chess is an interest
Distributed Folding and Folding @ Home because I feel they are beneficial and worthwhile.

I'm currently in the process of finishing up with the Seti project, not because of any dis-belief in aliens(I know they're out there somewhere), 🙂 but just because it's time for a change and there are MANY equally worthy causes.

Most of my rigs are switching over to the D2OL project, and I may fire up a couple on the Folding@Home project as well, both being primarily of a medical/bio nature. 🙂

I have been with Seti for over 4 years now and due to it winding down I have been looking for a project close to my love of medicine and being a paramedic, I have started recently working on FAD or Find a Drug, This program looks for "hits":

(from the FAD website)

Hits
Molecules which are predicted to interact or bind with a protein target are considered hits. These hits are ranked and the project statistics provide histograms of the distribution of hits for each protein target.

I have only been with it for a few days but I'm already up to 28th. place! 🙂 and have over 100 hits. It is a great feeling to know I'm contributing to the fight against Cancer/AIDS/Bio terrorism/SARS ect. and maybe one of my hits or effort will be the key to some kind of a help for a cure.

TeAm AnandTech STATS for Find a Drug

Find A Drug Website

(I'll still put a machine on the new Seti when it starts) 🙂

SoB is my project of choice... not necessarily because I'm interested, but because I find it fun 🙂

And I haven't seen any project with better stats. And it suits my dialup connection.

Currently I'm running SETI, either until the project finishes or we're compeletely safe from BBR. I'm also running D2OL every so often, under a combined TeAm account with my friends, because it feels worthwhile 🙂

Im SoB all the way, but if we do not find any primes in another 6 months time then i will move every machine i have over to another project, most likely find a drug or something related to helping cure diseases.

I am with D2OL. I prefer to heat my basement crunching for candidates against what will kill us eventually. Viri and bacteria.

i'm new to the whole dc thing. i've been reading up on all the different projects, but it's a little overwhelming to try & understand them all at once.

what are the best combination of projects to run together? i'm just running seti at the moment, & would like to contribute more. any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks.

Coquito,

Every project is worthwhile in its own manner and as long as your part of the TeAm it'll be ok no matter what you choose 😉

The problem with running multiple projects together is that unless you will split up your PC's amongst different projects you will have to take turns running project A for a week then Project B one your machine (assuming you have only 1 or 2 pcs) b/c every project uses 100% of cpu resources so only 1 project would get the resources if you ran both of them...

For example, running SOB and Seti @ the same time under lowest priority setting equates into SETI getting 99.5% of the cpu cycles with SOB getting the other .5%

One project that is good to run with any DC project is Chessbrain. Chessbrain will take up about 5% (if that) daily cpu usage randomly throughout the day so it can be paired to great sucess with another DC project.

Enjoy your stay either way 😀

ClimatePrediction.net because it's of interest for me as I study geography.
Folding@Home because I think it can realy make a difference for mankind someday.

I used to run SETI but lost interest in it. I mean, I still believe they're out there but I just don't think that it is in our time when we'll find a signal and from that, there r more important things to do first ....

Coquito,

As already mentioned, ChessBrain is good to run with other projects because it does not run all the time.

I also run DF & F@H together (both as services) and they use 50% CPU each (F@H has a CPU use setting).

I am running SETI and will contnue to do so until S@H 1 is finished. We must stay ahead of BBR. I may transition to another project after SETI 1 ends, or split up my fleet into different projects, all for the TeAm of course!

SETI is my main project but i've also dabbled in SoB & ECC2 just to try out different projects. I'm staying with SETI till it's transitioned to BOINC them i'd like to try some other projects, depending on how many computers i have running & which are dial-up friendly. I'm sure i'll run SETI/BOINC too as i really love the space related sciences.

Seti@home & BOINC.

Have previously run Genome@home. Tested UD (Think) folding@home & distributed-folding.
Stopped running genome mainly since this was transformed to use the folding@home-client, and got fed up by teams constantly looking for new project then some difficulties arises.
UD atleast before was crappy client. All of these clients needs much more baby-sitting than seti@home, either due to no good caching or time-limits. Of course, if they're ported to BOINC it's much more interesting to crunch any of these. 🙂

Since both folding@home & distributed-folding have the ability to set the priority, both these can run together with other projects, and together with seti@home.

And that poll will show the hords of SETI crunchers out there, not give a real reason to join. 😉

I'm on FAD now because I'm on a mission to make TA #1 in as many project as I can. It worked with D2OL and SOB so why not FAD.😉 Popularity of the project has increased since I started making noise so my master plan is working...BUHAHAHAHA!😀 Don't be afraid to join and help me acomplish my diabolicle mission.😉

LOL@Baldy. 😀

I started with Dnet & RC5 back in early '99, Got involved with OGR, then switched to SETI after the McOwen incident. Been running SETI since then, not sure what I'm going to do after SETI 1 ends. I will definitely check out some of the other projects though. 😀

I run seti because I firmly believe there is other life besides ours. Don't know if this is the best way to find it but haven't hear of another way to look for it yet. I run d2ol for the reseach and have ran TSC in the past because of the project's goals.
