OT: What Is The Fastest Processor I Can Install On An ABIT KT7-RAID MotherBoard?

I want to upgrade, but I have heard people talking about instabilities with processors that are beyond certain speeds, core changes in the processors, etc. I would hate to get one and have it not work with my mobo.

It is a KT7 and not a KT7A, just to clarify.

I wanted to post it here because I have a feeling a couple of you might know something about computers, and be a bit more likely to answer questions for a teammate.

Steve, I have the KT7A and just purchased a 1.4ghz chip for it.. I was told it can handle any current socket A chip... Abit documentation says 1.2, but that was at the time of printing -- it will fit a 1.4 and beyond. The bottleneck starts becoming the SDRAM where the new boards have DDR capabilities.

The only limiting factor is your power supply. I had a 300W PS that came with my antec case, so I'll see if it is stable. AMD rates my antec 300W to officially support only up to 900mhz, but people in the cpu forum are reporting no problems. Good luck and fun upgrading, --RT

(added) The kt7 and kt7a will support the same chips.. the difference is the FBS speed 100 vs 133. I think, but not sure, that you will want an original thunderbird 1.4 and not the new 1.4 266fbs versions. You can clock down, but the 266 will assume a 133 bus.

From what I've heard all the new Athlons are unlocked, so shouldn't you be able to get a 1.4 GHz which is normall 10.5x133 MHz, and run it at 14x100 MHz?

Get a 1.4 GHz - 266MHz, and just run it 14x100
I will perhaps demand an upgrade in bios, so a multiplier off 12 will read 14 or something

Here is a bit of a theory for those who only have a 12.5x multiplier (and are limited to 100MHz FSB). If your motherboard BIOS has a 'default' multiplier setting, then it may auto-select a 14x multiplier on the 100MHz FSB Athlons as I remember reading (unless I had a pretty mad dream) that the chips are programmed with a multiplier despite the condition of the L1 bridges.

Maybe someone could elaborate on this idea as to whether or not it works.

Hmm, forgot about the 12.5x multiplier. You might have to set the bridges to 14x (that can be done, right?), and then set the mobo to the default multiplier.
