OT: Western Digital Warranty Extension worth it?

I got two 75 GB (actually they are 800BB) drives last Christmas. The WD site says my warranty is good till 12/20/2003. They can also extend the warranty to 12/20/2005 (2 more years) for $14.99.

Should I go for it? I have not used the drives. They sat on my desk for a few months and then I put them in my 600SC but since it is noisy I don't really use the server so it pretty much stays powered down.

Please post your opinions people. I am usually against the extended warranties but $7.50 a year soulds too good to pass up. 🙂

Also does WD RMA drives due to noise? I have a pretty noisy 600BB that I'd like replaced. Apparantly, that came with a 3 year warranty so it is good till sometime 2005 too. 🙂

WD only RMAs i think if it does not pass their disk util test.

or is that maxtor?

i dont think they RMA due to noise and the extended warranty, i think it helps the selling price of the drive if you do end up selling the drive after warranty period.

i would extend the warranty, its well worth it!!!

and ive RMAed at least 50-60 harddrives over the last few years, many of them being western digital... nope you just fill out the online form and the rma process is automatic (ive RMAed a couple that worked fine but started making grinding or squeeling noise)

for that matter ive had no problem RMAing drives from maxtor, ibm/hitachi, seagate, maxtor, wd... they are all very easy and can be done online in about 5 min

For HDs, it always worth it. I would praise WD for it if they didn't introduce it just because they were shortening their warranty on newer drives :| Grrr... You're LUCKY you have a 3-year warranty. No more modern BB drives do 🙁
