I went to a P.O.D. concert last night with Ai3x and a load of mates from my home town!
The night was really cool!
Here's a quote from something one of the people on the UK Warrior forums, i hope he doesn't mind me borrowing it!
<< I'm now at work recouperating from the previous night's activities, namely the Skindred/Ill Nino/P.O.D. gig.
I have to queue for what seems like a mile going right around to the otherside of the building (Astoria, Charring Cross Street, London). Finally get in and have missed half of Skindred's set (
), and they were more or less playing to a cold crowd (probably because no one had heard of them :? ), so I felt sorry for them, even though they played a tight set.
I get further into the crowd and Ill Nino come in, full of energy throughout, but playing off of their Nu Metal (Gimmick) status, trying to be rebellious etc etc. I worked my way to the front of the "pit" suring their set, sweating buckets as well as getting cut from the top side of my left cheek down to the jaw. Also I have an ingrowing toenail in my left foot, so more often then not I was hop-moshing on my right leg (because when someone did land on my toe, it hurt so badly). Anyway, Ill Nino played things like "God Save Us", "What Comes Round", a cover of "Back To The Primitive" and finished with Liar. Also the singer, Talon (?) threw water bottles into the crowd, but pelted a woman in the face when he threw a full bottle towards the balcony area.
I'm literally within 6 feet of the stage now, with other P.O.D fans I've met up with, and they come on and start with "Set It Off" which gets the whole pit going, loads of crowd surfers, and those who knew the words joining in. Then they play "Boom" and Sonny dives into the crowd and I get hit with his dreads, and he gives me and others nearby "some skin" (or whatever) as he's rapping.
Sonny ends up spending most of the time stage diving and being in the crowd singing, we go through songs like "Lie Down", "Satellite", "School Of Hardknocks", "Rediculous" and then "Anything Right" where at one point he throws the mic into the crowd fo us to "sing" into it. After "Anything Right" they play their instrumental filler track "Celestial" so we can all take it easy and find our shoe's if neccessary.
Then they play "Southtown", and at the beginning someone throws a shoe landing on one of Wuv's drums, so he hits it back into the crowd with one of his sticks. Then the main riff kicks in and the mosh goes mental, people are barging me in the back, at this point part of my lower lip bursts and I'm being knocked repeatedly in the head (actually it gets to the point where a 15 year old girl is holding her head in her hands shook up by the whole experience. I ask her if she wants to get out (of the pit), she nods, so I pick her up over my shoulder, get her to surf to the front (just a couple of rows), and security helps her out.
Then it's "Without Jah, Nothin' " which is 10 times more crazy then Southtown with the thrash punk beat, until they get to the calm of the reggae vibes. Then it's "Masterpiece Conspiracy", followed by "Youth Of The Nation" where everyone joins in. Finally they play "Alive" which goes down well, and P.O.D leave the stage, but the crowd demands more by chanting and clapping to "P.O.D.! P.O.D.! P.O.D.!", so they come back on and play their FEOS cover of U2's "Bullet The Blue Sky", and end with "Messenjah".
We finally filter out of the Astoria, I pick up a "World Is A Ghetto" hoodie, XL, and a friend and I got to talk to Benji (singer from Skindred) for 10 minutes while he helped get their equipment onto their bus. He was pretty cool, kinda bummed the crowd was cold, and that Skindred could only play what was on their promo CD (which he gave us each one), and said if we could make the journey to check them out when they play at the Underworld (which is Milton Keynes, I think).
Prior to the gig I had made a design for a UK P.O.D t-shirt which everyone used on a D.I.Y. t-shirt, and loads of people turned up in it (which was great), and after the Gig one of the UK contacts for P.O.D whom I met earlier (she mods the boards at <a target=new class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.payableondeath.co.uk) had told the guys (POD) about the work I put into the design and how loads of us turned up in it, and apparently it blew them away. POD wanted to go out and meet the fans, but their US Record Company Guy recommended that they wash up from the gig, then they would have to drive to Wales so they could catch a ferry ot Ireland since they're playing in Dublin on Saturday
Anyway, I finally get home, my ears ringing (I'm actually gonna appreciate silence for the next couple of days), my toe is completely mangled, the cuts gonna be there for a few days (part cut part scrape), the lip will sort itself out, my left arm is really bruised, the back of my neck aches a lot (all the crowd surfers), and I'm still a bit dehydrated. But it was a op evening finished with a top band who are awesome live. >>
Of course some of the things referenced to him are not going to be the same for me, but the general gist of the night is outlined!
Take a look [L=here]http://64.239.38.216/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=000635">www.payableondeath.co.uk</a> for the thread i started on feedback from the gig!
