OT??? Wanting to Start Lan Parties.. Hard?

Hello,

I am wanting to start having Lan Parties in this Area ( Springfield, IL) I am pretty sure there are poeple out here that would like to get together every month or so and get some gaming in.

Anyway I had a couple of questions:

What kind of Location should I look for?
What kind of Power requirements?
Do I need a deticated Server for games?
Switches or Hubs?

Thanks
Phil

How many ppl are you planning on having? Are you going to charge them to attend?

Assuming, say, 50 ppl, here's a brief outline:

Location: something large. Bingo halls are good if you have the LP on an off-night. They can be rented cheaply. Local colleges will sometimes allow students the use of their facilities for stuff like this. We had a local "con" (just computer gaming) that worked that way.
Power: Figure 7 computers per circuit.
Dedicated servers: Yes. Maybe provide one yourself and then see if you can get some ppl who are coming to provide some.
Switches or Hubs: OMFG switches. Never hubs. Hubs suck. Hell, I don't even use hubs for my home network. For a sizable LP they are murder. I got pings as high as 55 ms in BF1942 at a local LP thanks to some hub-using SOB.

I think there're FAQs for this. Try google.

EDIT: linkage
EDIT: Usually, if something's "OT," you put it in the OT forum... 🙂
