Thanks in advance.

I will be getting my shoulder operated on soon and decided to get something to learn for the 4-6 months I will be Off work, as I won't

I just started trying Linux myself. I can see how Linux could be a revolutionary OS. If you installed it on every computer in the world, everyone would be really torqued off and maybe some of them would start a revolution.

Well, i'm really trying to get working, because everything else looks fine so far.
It shouldn't be this difficult:evil:

Almost everyone that runs Linux assumes that by RTFM , a NEWBIE will understand everything!!
Seems that helping out new users is OFF LIMITS!!! except for RTFM or do a search!!:|

I've been an automotive technician for 36 years now, and i can recalibrate a ECU on any Ford vehicule, it's easy when you know it
but I would like to see a student or even a computer guru do it if I gave them all the manuals!

Just a little venting, helps sometimes. 🙂

Well anywhere you go you will run across the RTFM Nazi's. Dont let them get to you There is one bbs for linux that does not allow the RTFM post but I cannot remember which one it is, I will try and find it. I have been runnning linux on one of my machines for a couple of months, bought a couple of pretty good books but still have some big problems, just keep plugging away.

Bleep

Would you like to know how many of us learned what we know about Linux? I read. I read. I played around with it. Oh yeah, and I read. I still have paper cut scars. Well, not really. But when we are asked questions that are answered in basic FAQs we tend to think: "I didn't ask that, I knew the answer because I read." So we wonder why we should give you easy answers that we never got. Does it really help someone when we hand them the answer? I don't think so. Maybe your parents never did this, but I remember wondering why they punished me when I was bad. Their response was typically STFU or we do it for your own good. Well, we do it for your own good. We do it so you can learn better.

So my response in your other thread went through some basics, hopefully cutting through the BS in the thread and getting to some real things to try. Hopefully you can atleast come up with something based on my post and the answers to the small things I wrote there. With that information, there is a good chance we can help track down the problem. Specifics are good 🙂

Well Thanks anyway n0cmonkey

Much appreciated. And a big CUDOs for the nix' FAQ that you and Electrode are working on :gift:

As for the reading, if you look at my post in the forum, you might notice that I did a lot of reading! I'm Master tech in my field and I give courses and training to new techs. When they're stuck on something they don't understand, it's no good to tell them to RTFM, they won't understand anymore,
so I have to explain it differently and show them why it works this way, to get over the Hurdle. If every teacher/tutor had the same attitude that most of the Linux community has, there would be no techs in this field to perpetuate the trade.

When you went to school, did the teachers tell you to RTFM and try to pass your grades by yourself??? I don't think so!!!!!
If I gave YOU all the books and manuals that I have relating to my job, and told you to read them and then go replace me, do you think you could??
I am POSITIVE that you couldn't! So please think about it!

Thanks again and keep up the Great work on the FAQ🙂

Cheers!

No, I probably couldn't. But, I bet I could come up with good questions unlike many (not all, and not a comment on your posts) of the Linux newbies. A big part of things is how you ask your questions. Big open ended questions that sound like you have not read anything are no good. If people put thought into their questions, make them as precise as they can, etc there is a much better chance that they will be answered. Quoting specific parts and asking for further explanation (maybe with a bit about how you understand that part of a FAQ) also goes a long way. I am sure you appreciate someone trying to understand something, and asking a good well thought out question.

As far as the FAQ project, there are others that have done much more work than myself. 🙂

Hope the surgery goes well, and we can work on this more afterwards.
