OT: This is weird

I've noticed over the last couple of days...
I have 2 internet shortcuts on my desktop, Google and AnandTech.
For some reason, known only to the god of vodka, after every few hours they refuse to do what they were put there to do!
Ie, double click on them and they laugh in my face (b@stards :| )
They only start behaving if I reboot 😕
And after that they're up to their old tricks again!!??!!
WHY???

When you click on the shortcuts do they open your browser and not load the pages, or do they not do anything at all?

I've seen some cases where a copy of Internet Explorer doesn't close properly and gets stuck in Windows memory so that even though it appears to be closed, Windows thinks it is still open and tries to open the web page from the shortcut in that existing (but invisible) browser session. The next time it happens, take a look at the Processes tab in the Task Manager to see if there are any listings for IEXPLORE.EXE. If so, kill the process and try to open your shortcut again to see what happens. I imagine the same thing could happen with FireFox but I don't personally use it so I couldn't tell you for sure.


If the shortcuts open a new browser window but don't load the web pages, it may be a case of Windows turning off your network card, or your Internet connection timing out (some DSL connections do this if you don't have a keep-alive setting in the DSL PPPoE software or on your router) and rebooting forces the connection to be re-established.

LOL! Already done that one... OMG it was funny.... that and switching the M and N keys on the keyboard... worked great on a guy who didn't have an M or N in his userid but did in his password! The PC Tech doing his internship at the time wanted to send the keyboard back to IBM because it was obviously defective... lol... 😀

LOL! Already done that one... OMG it was funny.... that and switching the M and N keys on the keyboard... worked great on a guy who didn't have an M or N in his userid but did in his password! Or change up the 10key, so that it goes like a telephone instead. hehehehee. That really messes people up. And it takes them a while to notice it as well. Or installing a wireless mouse into a spare USB port. Move it randomly from time to time. ROFL. That's fun as well.

We scheduled my supervisor's computer to do a complete HD scan (McAfee) every hour.

He tried to fix his "slow" computer for 4 days (I think he downloaded every spyware and virus scanner ever published) before he put in the trouble call to our System admins.

(we fixed it before the tech. got to him)
