OT: The officially unofficial Say (almost) Anything You Want thread

The officially unofficial purpose of this thread is simply for you and me to brag, groan, complain, or speak up about whatever. I decided to start this since some little tattle tail decided to get the other thread that I was using for this purpose locked. Please, folks, let's keep this reasonable: no multi-reposts spanning 4 freaking pages, all right? Then maybe the little sheriff / constable wannabe won't have any valid reason to "|317ch" about this to the Moderators. Of course, if some trigger (er, mouse button) happy person nefs too much and gets this locked, hey, it ain't my fault! 😉

Anyway, I'm cooking up a nightly batch of F@H stats while I listen to Dream Theater's Status Seeker on my wireless headphones. All while coughing and hacking (no, not the kind that pimple-farming 13 year olds do with viruses - the computer kind, of course), since I still haven't got over this dasm cold / sinus / sore throat / whatever thing that I got a score minus 5 days ago. I guess I shouldn't complain, since some of you are afflicted with much worse things, but whatever...

anything i want?

ok i would love to know ifif seti in linux (jamb) on a 2.8 b p-4 would run faster than running seti in winxp

brag?you guys are great, the numbers speak for themselves.

no complaints

If I remember correctly, the native SETI client for Linux is somewhat slower than the native Win32 one. This effect is mirrored in other projects, such as the one I participate in. My hypothesis is that the maintainers prefer to spend more time optimizing for more widely-used platforms. With a few small flags for the proper optimizing compiler, I bet they could speed it up somewhat, but the chances of that happening (well, at least knowing what I do about the people that run F@H, and seemingly DC projects in general...). Maybe (hopefully) the new "BOINC" will change things for the better for you SETI/Linux people. 🙂

Well, I just came back from seeing my beautiful somewhat-new GF. Having a really good time hanging around her. Shes very sweet and very nice to me. Shes just so cute, and we joke around all the time! I love to hang around her and all that. But she lives farther than I'd like (almost exactly 50 miles), so its hard for us to see each other often. I try and go there once a week.

I'm sick of working, I work too much, and I have school. So I get extremely exhausted from my schedule, and that makes it even harder to see my GF. I seriously dread this coming week (blackfriday), since I work in a mall, and a pretty busy store at that. I work a 10 hour shift, so kill me now.

I'm turning 18 next month... thats exciting I guess.

Meanwhile, my AthlonXP 2500+ @ 3200+ is running SoB @ 625k CEM, faster than its usual 550k CEM or so. Thats exciting.

Anyway, I'm pretty tired. I'm always tired. Not enough time to do all the things I want to do. Oh well, I guess I should head to bed.

OK....The TA SETI TeAm took a big hit. We're now only 2,500 ahead of BBR!

This makes this thread officially an On Topic thread!

Now what! :Q

Just read the thread 🙁 🙁.

Sucks hardcore when a big member leaves like that. Even though I'm not crunching SETI anymore, all my WU's will remain on the TeAm no matter what!

Best of luck to AT SETI TeAm.

Is the Beowulf project still going? I've not seen any bumpage of the Beowulf threads, and haven't noticed Lanman's presence in any of them for a long time. But if somebody is still working on that, I've got a 500MHz Celeron, some RAM, and (possibly - I'm not sure yet) a few other items that could go to the cause to help the SETI TeAm.

I still dunno why the other thread was locked? I can't stand going to OT, they are (for the most part) very "clikish" everytime I post something, some jack-in-ape starts bashing as if it wasn't off topic to the rest of the topics.

Here is my '99 Dodge with 33 x 12.50 Thornbirds in some deep ass water. The path is a 2 track for construction equipment that flooded after a rain. Unbeknownst to me, the reason that no one was working out there was because the tractor that pulled me out had actually gotten stuck going through this puddle the day before, so construction was halted for a few days while they located a water pump to remove the water.

I hit the water at about 35-40 MPH. I knew it was deep, but I thought I could make it. I probably would of, but I got high centered on a rut and my forward progress stopped. 33's and a locker do nothing if they can't touch ground.

I always come prepared, and had 150' of chain with me. (3 x 50' pieces.) first we chained my truck to my buddies Ford explorer, which did nothing. Then we added in another friends Dakoda. Nope. So on the last chain went a 2WD suburban. I didn't budge. Not even a little with 3 vehicles pulling. I was going nowhere fast.

So I put in a call to the guys who owned the property, who were building homes there. A little of fanagling, and they sent out that HUGE tractor. I have no idea what it was but it was big. The tires were about as tall as me. the perspective is all messed up, but trust me, it is HUGE.

It took all 150' of chain to reach far enough inland to a place the driver felt he could apply full throttle without sinking. My truck just sat there happliy idling all day.

So about 2 hours after getting stuck, and 2 cases of beer later, I was free. I spent the rest of the day changing fluids in the driveway of the house we rent 😛

This was in the Wis Dells last year.

Doesn't look too bad actually
Far away
waiting for tractor
Savior Arrived
Rehooking chain You can see the truck running.
Decently Deep
Best Pic of the series if you ask me 😛
Back on the ground
High Water mark 1/2 way up the seat I didn't want that DVOM anyway 😛
driveway Time to change fluids. (The Explorer that was zero help is in front of me 😛)

Well, my Explorer would have went right on no problem, that's a dodge for you!

<edit> well😱

All in fun, nobody got hurt, and it was starting to get too big for me to loas at work. However, I still would have liked it left, I have a lot of posts there.🙂

Evadman, that was one hell of an experience. Glad it worked out.

Thanks for the pics. 😀

Bumped and replied answering some questions. 🙂

I'll find something else interesting to talk about here soon 😉
