What are your feeling / thoughts regarding the moderation on AnandTech Forums? Your response can be in general, or DC specific (if it is one or the other, please post specifying). This is somewhat official-ish, so no thread-crapping or unrelated posting (these posts will be removed).

EDIT: And this is an open-forum thread. (That sounds weird). Say whatever you wish. I'm asking for absolute, honest input, so please speak freely about the mods. If you have some concerns about posting something specifically, PM it to me, and I will post it without user info... You get my point.

I only spend time in forums that don't attract childish idiots who like to throw random insults and vulgarity at everyone just to show how immature they can be. In the forums I visit, the only real moderating that has been needed is to delete the ridiculous spams and scams. In that regard, the moderating has been very good since the garbage rarely stays for very long.

On that note, this thread needs a solid whack with the ban stick:

posted other. i think that for the most part the moderation here is pretty good, but there are some cases where it could be stricter, and other cases where it isnt always strict enough. more cases where it could be stricter than not though. this mostly goes for the VC&G forums though, the rest of the forums here are pretty well self moderated, most of the moderation related stuff i end up reporting is just spam posts and the like. i should mention that i only go to this forum, and then some of the hardware forums (cpus, gpus, mobos, memory, cooling, PSU, and sometimes highly technical)

As a mod, I think it was OK, until recently when we were told to lighten up. People like Mr Pedantic get away with murder, and I can't do anything.

As for Narzy, PM me a link, I don't see it.

Among more mature members no or very little moderation is needed.
That is the way we are doing here.
Although I like to push the limits in a gentle way (see the BBQ-thread or "Please delete"). As long as moderation hits hard and - this is very important - fast when serius transgressions or personal attacs occur. This has not happened often here.
OTOH: one slightly less wnated consequence is thatr the forum becomes slightly more bland and less attractive - fighting and misery has always great attraction. I prefer the blandness to fighting and attacking; the best discussions in DC are about DC, and fun ...

yea i have to agree, among the more mature members we really dont need much moderation. it's the immature ones that get us to go at each others throats from time to time. sometimes i think people just get a little bit to hyped up about inanimate objects lol

The moderation is generally pretty good, sometimes a little strict. But I'd really like one section, "Thunderdome" style, without any moderation, and invisible to non-registered members. (like L&R is) Apart from that, Anandtech is pretty much one of the best moderated forums out there, mods are generally justified when they start taking action.

First of all, here in DC, I've never had a problem with mods being too lenient. The worst problems were when "they" - "they" didn't publicize their names back then - started locking our nef threads. So don't lock the BBQ thread, please. ;)

As for OT, I've been browsing there more since the forum switch, and it seems to have gotten out of hand lately. There recently was a thread about census workers where one guy just kept spouting off, and despite suggestions in the thread for a ban (more serious than the usual "pics/ban" type), nothing was done. That kind of thing, and the personal attacks in Narzy's thread, should at the very least earn warnings.

this has to do with Narzy and his situation
I didn't look at the thread, but it must have been bad to make a 10 year veteran of these AT forums (and a TeAmmate) decide to leave! I thought the forums should be a help to the TeAm - not a hinderance. I don't go into those forums, but from this it seems they need more moderation.

In the sub-forums I frequent (in order: DC, CPU & OC, Cases & Cooling, Video Cards, Motherboards, Hot Deals) the moderation seems VERY GOOD!!

So a big "Thank You" to the moderators of those forums - job well done :)

I voted "What Moderation" mainly because I don't notice them. But I lead a sheltered life..............

I don't venture much past the confines of DC, which in actuality, probably doesn't need a moderator.

I did back in the day, but decided life was too short to get embroiled in the flame wars.

Edit:
Point of reference........... my first forums were on Prodigy and Compuserve............. :D
Although my son ran a local bulletin board service that got a little racy at times........

Imo, the thread wasnt too bad, thicker skin should have prevailed, but he shouldnt have had to deal with it. It was pretty typical of OT. Narzy posted a pic of his girlfriend and got the typical "Do not want" "Shes ugly" type posts from the OT troll crowd.

For the most part the moderation seems pretty lenient at times and over sensitive other times, based on who is doing the moderation. Some are very conservative and have edited my posts for using the word dildo, while others allow whole threads on fleshlights. Inconsistency is the main theme around here.

Narzy's gone? :(

Overall the moderation is pretty good here, i think. Maybe in places like OT there could be more consistency but i realize that mod A is going to see things differently at times than mods B & C.

In places like DC, i don't know... when's the last time a mod had to do much here? Maybe the occasional spammer.

As been said it's very rare the mods need to take action in here.
I very rarely stray out DC, just occasionally go to CPU, mbrds, cars. I haven't been into OT for literally years as I actively avoid going there.
TBH I don't know what the modding is like outside of DC as I so rarely go out of here!.

I haven't seen the thread relating to Narzys leaving so I can't comment about that either atm, could someone post or PM me a link to it?

I will so though that personal attacks shouldn't be tolerated, especially where its unprovoked.

Check out the thread by Narzy here called 'I start here, I end here'.

I voted "too lenient", because I really think it is, especially in OT. You can tell some people post there looking for serious answers and people just post with pics saying things like "Cool story, bro" or similar. And then there are people who post personal attacks left, right, and center or just slam some user's ideas whenever he posts or starts a thread.

As a mod, I think it was OK, until recently when we were told to lighten up. People like Mr Pedantic get away with murder, and I can't do anything.

I can't believe it. Infamous already?! What did I do to deserve this?!?

I don't mind tough staff, as long as it's consistent

Cheers waffleironhead :).

Well now I've read it I do think a few people were rude, & it was totally uncalled for not to mention they didn't help in the design 1 iota.
Personally I think the people making the derogatory comments should of had their posts deleted & told not to make personal attacks again. (e.g. Freshgeardude, nick1985, & AndroidVageta, their are several others where it's ambiguous as to whether they meant the badge or his GF. If they meant the badge it was still derogatory not critical).

Does anyone know if Narzy reported it to the mods?
If the mods knew about this particular instance & nothing was done then I'd definatly say too lenient in this case, I still don't know about ATOT in general though ;).

Oh & I voted 'other'.

I'd also like to know if any of those posts were reported.

There isnt a forum I belong to that the subforumns pertaining to the topic (like this DC thread) are maintained in a reasonable manner and the "seems to be required" OT thread isn't out of hand. OT forums seems to bring out the 13yr old in all of us. It's easy to kill a thread in this forum because "it's not related" but what is not related to "Off Topic"?

Moderators in an OT thread have two options. Let it be an open battle ground or Kill any thread as soon as the 1st name calling starts. Either way, "off topic" forumns are not for the weak at heart.

Sorry but unless some posts have been deleted I don't see anything bad enough in that thread to make anyone want to leave. I personally think the Mods do a good job in the forums I visit ( DC, for Sale or trade, Hot deals, and the gaming threads.) I don't have the time to waste in Off Topic and the like. I work for a living and have a life, unlike most of those guys it seems.

I have had one post deleted in my brief DC career. It was on the message boards at Orbit@Home. It was deleted because the Mod considered it obscene. The post I quoted was also deleted. Both would be acceptable on OT and on the Please Delete and BBQ threads in DC.

I think that NASA-funded projects expect a lot of school children to view the sites, so they take extra care.

I think the stuff I post can be viewed by children, however I wouldn't want my mother to see it!
