OT: Sony 16x DVD Problems w/XP

Hey guys, I tried this before in the Peripherals forum but I got no responses after three bumps🙁 Here's the problem:

I got a Sony 16x DVD-ROM for Christmas. I installed it and it played the first movie fine and after ejecting it and trying another it would not read it. It wouldn't read data or audio discs either. I have since figured out that to get it to work I have to go into Device Manager/Sony DVD Properties and go through the tabs, sometimes I change the region (it doesn't change off of 4 changes left) or click on one of the driver buttons. Then I ok out of the Properties and it sometimes now spins up and reads the disc that is in it. Weird, eh? The drive is not in the Windows XP HCL (hardware compatibility list), but on the page I bought it from it says that it is XP compatible. Does the HCL take a bit to update or is this actually not supported? I have heard of other people installing it in XP without problems though. Any ideas?

Specs:
AMD Athlon XP 1600+
Shuttle AK31 v3.1 (KT266A)
ATI Radeon 64MB DDR VIVO
Seagate Barracuda ATAIV 40GB (Primary/Master)
Quantum Bigfoot 8GB (Primary/Slave)
Sony DDU1621 DVD-ROM (Secondary/Master) - this is the problem
LG 8160B CD-RW (Secondary/Slave)
Windows XP Home

Thanks for your help in advance🙂

Hmm that is weird.
Can you send it back? Perhaps it's a faulty unit!
I know that some hardware companies don't concern themselves with HCL (old Matrox cards come to mind) but it is rare that the problem is that. I don't have XP so I dunno about this but is DMA enabled on this in device manager?

<< Have you installed the latest 4 in 1's?

if not go here: 4in1 via drivers

I have a 12x40 Toshiba dvd and a 12x10x32 Acer cdrw. I haven't had your problem, but this may fix it.

I coudl almost kiss you GunDog, but your name doesn't sound so appealing, so I won't. It wasn't the 4-in1's (already had 4.37) but it was the miniport one!! Works like a charm now! Yes, this was such a pain in the ass for me😀😀😀😀😀😀
