OT: Sometimes things are just so difficult...

Blah,

Bought an MSI K7DMaster mobo and 2x MP1800+ for cheap, and thought I'll build a nice cruncher from these. (DC is addictive? have you noticed???)

Well, first board I get is DOA... sent it back and waited for a new one. It finally arrives, and I set everything up and turn it on... to get a memory error. It won't even POST, and the diagnostic leds indicate that memory is the problem. 2 new pairs of Transcend ECC DDR333.
Well, sent the memory back and wait for a new pair. Same problem, so I assume that these sticks are not compatible with my board.
Plugged in some cheapo Kingston ValueRAM, and Dadaa... it works! ...until after boot I get "DISK I/O ERROR". Dasm, check cables and all seems to be ok. This is a factory refurbished IBM deathstar 60GXP. Just opened from a sealed back I received ~month ago.
Plug in an OLD 3,2Gig WD, and it works. So the HDD is dead.

AND, that's not all. I bought nice case w. 420W PSU. And now that I have this thing running, I noticed that the front led's don't work. No matter what I do/ how I plug the cables... But I am too tired now to take everything off and return it.

BUT, THIS THING IS NOW UP AND CRUNCHING (allthough with old WD 3,2Gb HDD). SO RUN BBR... I mean FORREST, RUN!

😉

Damn, that is a bad run of luck!!

You don't need the LEDs, just listen for it 😉

Oh well, at least it's up and running! 🙂

Is it me or did more people notice that with all the newer systems, huge amount of memory flavors and all this speed that almost nothing will work at once??
It's not only here, but everywhere around me to, memory problems, vid-card compatibility problems, PSU problems and so on..
So speed comes with a nagging cost 😉

Glad it's up and running!! 🙂

I am repeating myself from elsewhere, but:

Working on computers is the only thing that can make me break out in a cold sweat......................but I keep doing it..........................😀

I'm with ya here. I've had a few hardware failures over the past few weeks at home and at work. I was fighting with one of my systems last night for several hours. It was stable overnight but who know the next days, weeks, months...

A friend of mine ordered an Asus motherboard (can't remember the model but it's a newer AMD board). It was totally DOA on arrival. We tried everything including various RAM and video cards sitting outside the case. Never got it to display anything. It kept giving a memory error and none that we tried (3 different sticks of mine and 2 that he ordered) would work.

In short, I feel your pain! 🙂

Absolutely 😀!! There is nothing more annoying then working with little screws, cables and jumpers in a packed case full of expensive hardware...
The only advice I can give people is when you don't 'need' a pc, DONT buy one!!!

I Never had any problems with my 486 or P200MMX...
