Also there is no shortage of Hydro but there is a shortage of Intelligent Hydro management. Here in Canada there's enough Hydro infrastructure in the provinces of Manitoba and Quebec to power the entire country but because of Ontario Hydro's mismanagement and corruption and the Government's hypocrisy and stupidity towards hydro deregulation and ignorance in forecasting future consumptions we now have the hydro system stretched to the max.
As with all things in Canada and specially in the province of Ontario, everything is cut to the bone, classrooms are overcrowded, hospitals are always full and the Hydro systems are running at max but it's MADE to be this way and there is no room for the slightest mistake but when it comes to hydro it will bite them back in the ass. Can you imagine if at the peak of a heat wave they would come and say "oh the system was only running at %20 of full capacity". That will never happen, even if they could do it which they can.
The Ontario Government is just now starting to look towards Manitoba and Quebec for assistance, something they should have done two or three years ago.
Also in August 1997 the government took a decision to shut down seven of Ontario Hydro's 19 operating nuclear generators. They originally wanted to permanently shut them down but it backfired on them when the energy demand grew and they officially changed their minds saying that "the strategy was to refurbish the seven, the oldest reactors in the system." But these repairs have taken several years longer than planned.
They didn't need to shut down seven nukes at once, they could have done 1 or 2 at a time..... Two of the three units at the Bruce power installation on Georgian Bay were to have started coming back on stream this spring. But (because of corruption) that has been delayed. One of the four units shut down at Pickering east of Toronto was supposed to start supplying power by July 1. It, too, has fallen behind the target (because of mismanagement and corruption).
Also, plans to refurbish the other three reactors that are out of service have been put on hold because of the problems experienced by Ontario Power Generation in bringing one unit back on stream. <-------- this is pure BS. Remember people, supply and demand..... you don't want to tell the populus that you have an abundance of hydro do you.
If they were to have only 2 of these 7 Nuke Gens online it would take care of the heaviest of demands, and that's not counting the future possible hydro infrastructures with Manitoba and Quebec.
Funny how in private enterprise it's called corruption and mismanagement but if you're a Government department of agency it's called "unexpected problems, behind target and delays".
So go ahead turn that Air conditioning on, plug as many computers as you can afford because in Canada there is NO shortage of Hydro. Don't get me started on natural gas....
