We lost a great, great man. While (due to the Alzheimer's) he's been gone for quite a while,
we didn't get to say goodbye.
As one who grew up during the cold war - who remembers the nuke drills, and the fear that
the former Soviet Union would annihilate us all - I think it poignant that his one-time nemesis, became his friend - and Mikhail Gorbachev will be attending the funeral.
To have even contemplated any of this in say... 1965 would have been beyond anyone's comprehension. Now -- The wall is gone, the President of Russia visits the President of the United States at his home. Gone are the red banners, the hulking specter of the bear, the strategic missles being paraded through Red Square.
He was asked how he'd like to be remembered... as a great actor - or a great president, he replied: "I'd like to be remembered as the president who gave the government back to the people."
Amen.
Rest in Peace, Sir.
