I'm looking for a 50" (or there abouts) projection HDTV, should be LCD or DLP. Budget is sub $3K. Require VGA connector and 1280x768 resolution so I can run my HTPC into it without hassle. Looked at Samsung HLP-5063W HERE but they seem to have common faults (won't power on, audio sync issues when using external amp). Sony and Hitachi TVs don't have VGA, so they're out. Mits are expensive, and Panasonic don't have as good a picture as the others. To be honest, I'm a bit bewildered at the moment. Does anyone have any recommendations?

We just got a Sony 50" Grand Wega and couldn't be happier. It was $3800CDN including 15% tax and a nice stand.

lol my wife and I just went looking for a new RP tv today at ultimate electronics. Some very nice tvs, from what I read on the net the tvs with DLP are getting the best reviews. I dont remember which model # I liked the best but I know it was a 50" Mitsubishi. From what I read DLP will have the best color reproduction an have better blacks and whites.

Funny, but the ad at the top of this page says:

56" HD-Ready DLP TV Incredible Picture. Only 19" thick. On sale for only $2500. Save $1000!

and the link takes you to Gateway.com... where they don't sell DLP TVs!

I just bought a Samsung HL-P5085W 50" DLP TV, its a bit over your price range, but I'd save up and get it, it has a kick ass design and the best image quality out there, and a very nice contrast ratio (3000:1 I believe), the picture is fantastic.

How does it compare to the HLP-5063W ?

I remember both of these side by side in Circuit City, and the 5085 blows it away, as well as all the other TV's. It's brighter, sharper, and crisper, and really looks kick ass. Though the 5063 looked very good as well.

The problem I have with the 5085 is that the stand is fixed to the unit. This makes it much less easily moved, which is a factor for me.

Well in that case, I'd avoid the 5085 :-D. It wasn't easy to get it into place, and weighs a hell of a lot (around 150lbs). I know the 5063 is around 75 pounds, it still won't be easy to move, but should be a lot easier.

The 5085 (HD2+ chip) is WAY better than the 5063 (HD3).

You may want to check out the Toshiba 52HM84. It's very good, and fits your budget.

It's 2" bigger than the Samsung and is about the same price but unfortunately it doesn't have a VGA connector. I ended up ordering the 5063 from Buy.com for $2880 with free shipping. I used my VISA Gold card so got an extra year's onsite warranty included.

UPDATE: Damn you, Apex! ;) You sowed doubt in my mind and I canceled my order with Buy.com. The Toshiba looks like a great set but it's not a straight forward job to attach a PC. Do you know of any other HD2+ sets that might have a VGA input?

UPDATE #2: I bought a Panasonic PT-50DL54. It is 50", has VGA input, HD2+, and all for about $2400 + shipping.
