OT: questions regarding xp hsf!

I have a friend's pc on an Antec sx1030b case using xp1800, with three case fans, hsf combo is a svc golden gate with a ys-tech 5.5k rpm fan w/artic silver 2. Still, temps are around 51c - 54c under full load (according to motherboard monitor). He reapplied the artic silver twice, same temps.

My question is which way should the fan on the heat sink be set up - should it be blowing air into the heat sink or sucking it out??

edit: mobo is an epox ep-8kha+

You can't compare temperatures on different motherboards, so we'll need to know your motherboard :)

As a reference, my Athlon 1 @ 1.47 on ECS K7S5A is running at about 47C full load, and same cpu and hsf, and on an ABit KT7 was about 51

As for which direction, i think the best way is to swap it over and see the difference :)

You could try it both ways and check the difference in temps.

But those temps are pretty normal at full load for and XP. Don't worry about them, the cpu can run up to 90 C without porblem!:)

Very fast cpu's especially if bump up fsb. :D

Could always check out the CoolerMaster HHC-001 from Newegg. Have that on both of my XP1800+ (with FSB set to 140) and the temps have never gotten above 45C. But, the 7k rpm fans whine more than I'd like.

The direction the fan blows depends on the design of the Heatsink. I would suggest checking the manufacturer's website to see what they recommend.

Make sure your friend has selected the correct Temp Sensors. ;)

I have just finished building a 1800+ XP on an Epox 8KHA and have it installed in an Antec SX-830. I added two case fans to the front that are blowing into the case. The case came with two case fans exhausting out the rear in addition to the PS Exhaust fan.

OC to 1610 MHz and running SETI 24/7. Temp is usually around 44C - 45C. I'm using the latest MBM version.

I'll let him know...Conjur - regarding 7k rpm fans, I've been there, not going back since it's way too loud for me (like a 747 on the runway) :Q

Thanks folks! Ya'll been a great help!! (who need the other forums??) ;):D

Smokeball: Someone I can compare hardware with :) I checked (on his computer as I type), is your fan blowing into the heatsink?

Yes, the HS fan is blowing down towards the CPU. I don't think I've ever seen one that blew air up (sucking air from the direction of the CPU) on any of the computers I have dealt with. (Not that many, mind you - maybe 9 or 10).

I didn't mention the Cooler. On the system I described a few posts ago I have a CoolerMaster DP5-6l 11a Heatsink Fan.

I, just three days ago, finished another 1800+ XP on an Epox 8k7a also in an Antec SX-830 case. I have a Volcano 6u+ on that one running also at 1610 MHz and the temps were pretty steady at 40C. My son is using that computer as of yesterday. He puts his box under his desk where it does not get a good air flow. It is encased on 3 sides by the computer desk. I've had problems with other computers he has run because of this poor location so I decided to get him one of the better coolers regardless of the noise. That computer now is running at 42C. So his poor location for the computer has only raised the temp by 2C. I'm pleased.

My son did mention to me that it was pretty loud. I told him that if it was too loud I could let him have one of the computers that ran real quiet. He knew that I meant an old slow one so he quickly added that "it's not that loud". Ha LOL :D

Greg, i just started using mbm5, what Temp sensor are you using. Is WinBond 2 the right one.

you shouldnt worry about those temps unless the computer starts giving you problems (like rnadom reboots or unexplainable BDODs)

However, it might be that the HSF is installed the wrong way. I've never used that HF, so I dont know how it installs, but ith many HSs it is easy to put the clamp on backwards, so the fulcrum isnt directly over the core. This can lead to higher temps. Also, check to make sure it isnt contacting anything on the motherboard which may be preventing it from making full contact with the core. And most heatsinks work better with the fan blowing air into the HS. Alphas, however, are set to have the fan sucking air, because their pin density is so thick that blowing air would just result in a lot of turbulence around the head of the pins.

Also, how much AS2 was applied? only a very thin layer is needed. Just enough to cover the core, but thin enough that you can still see writing.

ROTFLMAO Smokeball!!!!! :p

Got my Alpha PAL 8045 with Arctic Silver III on my XP 1900 now. Wow. What a cooling unit that thing is! My ambient/idle is about 5C cooler than when using the GlobalWIN copper CAK! :Q

Hit 142MHz FSB at default Vcore in almost a single shot (I tried it at 138MHz first just to see). Am running a 0.425 WU from scratch to see what I get. :)

Noise level is one topic that I needn't get involved in - I have a dual Xeon rig with a 120mm fan mounted on the outside of the case because there's no room on the inside, and it adds very little to overall ambient noise level in my basement. :Q

Mind you, I'm down here most of the time when I'm home, so I've just tuned it out for the most part. ;)

Talk to Baldy18, he'll confirm what my place is like.
