Here it is - maybe someone here knows what's happening:

This is weird, I have this Linksys router I am using in a completely basic setup - DHCP turned off, all machines connected via ethernet cables (wireless disabled). The router connected to a Comcast cable residential modem.

The internet works great until anyone in the house connects to some kind of media download.
WMV, WMA, Quicktime - format does not matter.

We can all download files just fine, 300+ meg demos come right in.

When it happens I cycle power to the router & the internet is restored.
WTH is up with this thing? What should I look at, where do I start?

What happens when someone downloads media? Does everything just stop? What model Linksys? Have you tried updating the firmware or configuring the firewall in the router?

I use 'automatic configuration - DHCP' seettings with DHCP enabled on my lynksys router and 'automatically detect settings' in my IE LAN connection settings with Comcast modem. Works for me. Might want to try it there.

I did update to the latest firmware, I get a lot of problems when I enable DHCP - that's why I have static IP's on all machines. It locks up often, and don't get me started on the wireless "capabilities". Betwen having DHCP & Wireless turned on I was power cycling every hour.
With those turned off I can go days between problems.
Until someone tries to stream a media file.
Downloading the file doesn't cause the problem.

What is the version/model number on the Linksys router? I've seen a lot of problems with their routers recently and it your scenario of rebooting the unit to fix the problem is all too common.

There must be some difference between streaming and downloading.

Does streaming still use a different protocol? UDC or something like that and downloading uses TCP?

Are you using windows media player? If you don't turn the settings off, they like to "authenticate", "display media information from the internet", "update the media files", & "check for updates". There are also alot of files now that are pay per view, & you would have to connect to provide your info.

Blocking WMP from connecting, can drag along things if those checkboxes in options aren't cleared.

/all I can think of

It's a Wireless B router.

I will check the settings and see if all that authentication stuff is on or off, thanks.

Ok, I turned off a lot of those authentication & auto downloading things and also in networking UDP & TCP were checked - I unchecked them and only left HTTP & Multicast.

Then I connected on the wifes PC and played a couple movie clips - and the internet is still up.

More testing to come.

Next Update -

I have changed settings on 3 machines & tested, works as advertised.

Seems having all that stuff turned on was killing the router.

Now if I could get it to reliably stay up with the wireless turned on.
Quickest way to kill my internet connection is to enable wireless encryption.
Man these linksys routers are weak. Some might ask why I haven't bought a new one...
Ever read the Network forum here - all those people with Netgear & Linksys Wireless G routers having the same kinds of problems that I am.
