I figured I would post this since I got the board off of Hellburner. :D

[Copied from another post on another forum]
I've been experiencing errors with this board ever since I installed 2 match processors in it, I'm running linux with it, and it will somtimes give me weird gibberish errors, and I have to reboot. But, whats weird is, it won't do this all the time, somtimes I reboot it and its fine till I reboot it again then it starts spittin erros at me again, but then it goes away after a reboot. I have a suspicion that I don't have the jumpers on the VRMs set right, if somone knows the jumper settings for these, it would be appreciated. I should also note that the processors are overclocked to 233, and they have brand new HSFs on them, so I don't think that would be the problem. Any ideas and suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

EDIT: Well its done it again on a install of Redhat 7.3. I can see some of the error, but most is blocked out by menus in the installer. Some text I think may be important is: "EIP is at (2.4.18-3BOOT)" and "Process kjournaled (pid 67, stackpage=c3e1f000)". Seems to do it every time now. :(

I agree with Ray. If you have any problem on an overclocked system, the first step is to set it back to default speeds on everything.

Well I thought about that, but I am unable to locate the manual....and the SuperMicro site only has the BIOS manual, not the board manual with all the goodies in it. I've been looking for it for over an hour now and no luck. I hope it didn't get tossed!

Thanks for the the links. I found the manual...it was in the magazine rack in the bathroom of all places. :D

I'm going to change these jumpers now, I'll keep ya posted!

That's why we call it the "Library". ;);)

I think my Asus MB manual is in the basket in our bathroom too. :D or should that be :Q?

:D

Good luck with the troubleshooting! :)

So far so good. Oddly enough the install seems to be going faster than it was before. But now I have concerns with output on the powersupply. Hopefully it'll stay stable. :| Since I had to downclock the processors, there goes my hopes of sub-24 hour workunits. :(

Welp, 5 mins later the installation craps and the CDROM ejects. Not good.... I'm going to try a more conservative ram timing.

Well it crapped on install again, this time before it even started copying files. It aborted becuase it recieved a "signal 11", whatever that is. Time to find out what that means...redhat.com here I come!

Just a thought, the second socket was empty through however many years of continuous use, it no doubt is full of dirt/dust/corrosion... Perhaps blowing it out with some compressed air and maybe reseating the cpu a couple times.

Well from what I have read that error is consistant with bad ram and/or bad cache. Maybe I bought some bum CPUs...who knows. I'll have to mess with it tomorrow...I'm getting sleepy. :(

SuperMicro P6DNE and P6DNF are well known for corrosion at the psu ATX connector on the motherboard. I actually had this same thing happen to me, until it got to the point where it would not boot at all, and smoke started coming out of the case. It totally destroyed the plastic connectors, so I desoldered the one on the m/b, cut the melted ATX plug off the psu, and soldered the wires directly to the m/b.
I am running dual PPro 200/1meg cpu's and have also destroyed a vrm. The PPro 200/1meg cpu's draw a lot of power!
About 18:30 per wu running W2k at 233, before things started melting, then I chickened out and cut it back to 200.

I took a peek at the PSU connectors and they still look decent.

I'm now thinking..hard-drive...now it seems everytime the installer access the HD for the first time the installation craps...Now I'm real tired...now I have somthing to do tomorrow! :D

Ok well I'm stumped, I try it again this morning and it installed fine and seems to running stable. Beats the heck out of me. :| Methinks the power was goofy last night, yet none of my other systems seemed to be affected.

An hour of running fine, I disconnect the monitor cable and keyboard and roll the case back where it sits, 15 mins later I hear a beep and my SSH session is dead. I think I MIGHT be overbudget power wise, so I'm going to put the drives and fans on a small PSU that I have laying around here and see if that works out. Wish me luck. :(

Well I found the problem...it was the power supply putting out some awkward voltages...cause...a ant crawled into the PSU and decided to make itself a organic resistor of sorts. Anyways, he blew up and he smells like burnt hair...now I need a PSU. Anyone? :D

EDIT: No +5v output on the PSU, but it powers fans!
EDIT #2: Great, the PSU fan doesn't work either, so when I shut the case door the temp alarm scream bloody murder. :D

If it is a standard AT PSU, I have one you can have for the cost of shipping.

The one in the case is far from standard, the thing is a beast, it prolly weights 30-40 pounds. I'd take some pics but I have the mobo running on a "borrowed" PSU that has to find its way back into a computer before monday morning. :D But I have some aluminum plating that I am going to use to make a adapter so I can mount a standard sized PSU in it.

How many watts are those PSUs? I need/want somthing at least 230-250+ watts.

I guess I could also start looking for P1 and P2 extensions for the PSU.

Not sure, I'll have to go dig them out and see. I'ev got one big huge one I could send ya, definitely not standard size. ;);)

I'll get the thing out of the case tonite and draw up a diagram with deminsions for the back face.

You don't happen to have that P6DNE in a SuperMicro SC-801 case with redundant psu, do you?
It sure sounds like it! (that's what I have). SuperMicro calls for a 250 watt minimum psu for the dual PPro boards, and if you are running PPro 200/1meg cpu's it will take every bit of that. I fried one VRM when I switched from 200/256 to 200/1meg, I figure the other one is going to go any time now.

Good Luck :D

I dunno who makes the case I have it in, but its a older fileserver case that I pulled a 486 mobo out of. The PSU in the case is/was rated for 210 watt output but I fried that. I'm using a 200 watt now and it seems fine, but I also don't have any devices on the same PSU, I'm powering the HD, CdRom and floppy with a 100 watt. All outside of the case and on top becuase the PSU is dead and I have no way to vent the heat. :D

Here is a link to the one in my dual PPro (RPI4300F -) HERE and here is a Link to the SuperMicro SC801-S case. Just wondered if yours was like mine.
