on any car i drive, when i park, i always use the parking break because thats what its made for and its 2nd nature to do so.

It's a standard for me to automatically not use my parking break. 🙂

Seriously, I know I should but ever since I wore my breaks cause I partially used my parking breaks then drove my car around wasting gas and breaks before I realized what the problem was, I stopped using them. My wife uses them all the time so it always messes me up when she's been driving my car and I go to use it.

Always in both cases. After driving a manual for so long, it is second nature not matter if I am driving a manual or auto.

Also I leave it in gear too. I figure most do on their manual too. I didn't at first but one day I found my car had rolled down the parking lot! The parking break was in but something didn't catch when I pulled it back so it never clicked in.

I never bothered much on my old Camaro (auto) but on my new car I use it all the time. Don't really know why. I guess I started because the car was new and never stopped. It also has the benifit of keeping things aligned, from what I hear.

on a manual transmission is it best to leave the car in 1st gear or reverse? ive seen people do it both ways and i have always left mine in 1st gear...

I leave my car in reverse. The main reason I do this is because it does not always want to go from first to reverse with out letting the clutch out some so that the dog teeth can get spinning...

I guess it really depends on if you are is up a hill or down a hill. If you are facing up a hill then I would think you would want your car to be in reverse because that would put the torque of the cars weight on the correct turning direction of the engine... And of course it would the other way for going down a hill.

But I really don't have a clue. I leave it in 5th some times too. :S

Manual. I never use the parking brake except on a strong incline. And I always leave it in 1st.

I rarely park on a strong incline, so it's like I never use the parking brake. 🙂

Same for the wife's auto. Never use the parking brake, except on a very strong incline.

And again, I rarely park on a strong incline, so it's like I never use the parking brake. 🙂

Even if its not second nature for you to use it all the time, you should use it occasionally just to keep the adjusters and cables from freezing up and not having them when you do need them. It can be rather costly to fix them once siezed. Us poor techs need to work on your vehicle once in awhile and if we need to do some dangerous work on the ground in neutral its nice to have the park brake in working order.

Every time I take my car to get some work done on it (something I cannot do of course) I let them know they parking break does not always catch. They are usually pretty thankful that I told them.

That's what wheel chocks are for. 😛

Same here, never use it unless on a strong incline.

Also once in a while come to a stop using the parking brake only to test the cable tension and makes sure the system is working OK as MasterTech said.

I never use the parking break. 😛 Where I live, one week of road salt in the winter and the parking break won't release.:disgust: So, as a compensation, I park perpendicular to the incline so the car won't roll. 😀

Yep same here and it can also freeze up and then you're really screwed.

I don't use the parking brake on my own cars, but when I drive the comercial truck,I use it everytime
as I got tired of chasing it down. It's an automatic with no park,I also use chocks on it also as the parking brake isn't strong enough to hold it on an incline of any kind.
It is a delivery van (Diesel).
I would never have thought an 18000 lb vehicle would be so stupidly designed.

I've only driven automatics and have never used the parking brake except for once. Of course it locked on and getting it unlocked was an adventure 🙂.

I was driving around a 1980~ step van. And that thing had the strongest clutch and parking break I have ever seen!

I only drive automatic, and use the parking brake on inclines (both strong and not so strong). I don't use it on flat areas, or very mild inclines (like what you'd find in a large store parking lot).

other combination......

I only use the parking brake once in a great while and then it would be to adjust the rear brakes........i HATE getting in a car at work and try to move a car and the damn brake is on.....ITS FLAT GROUND....WE ARE GOING TO BE WORKING ON THE CAR!! ...our service guy allways sets the parking brake.....pisses all of us off.....anyway its a long story..(lol).....with an automatic you should always set the parking brake....on an incline , if you dont set it.....the weight of the car is resting against the parking pawl.....the lever can "spring" out of park and brake things......(if your not resting on parking brake)...........hows this for a long winded answer.......
