OT - PIII upgrade path... Advice needed..

Hi,

With the PIII Coppermine being phased out soon do you think the price of remaining PIII 1Ghz chips will go up or down ?

I'm trying to decide whether it's worth upgrading my Dell Optiplex 667 now or wait for a while ??
I'm assuming the Tualatin processors won't work in my machine..
Also, would the PIII 1Ghz work on the same voltage as a PIII 667 ?
I can't see anything in the BIOS or on the mobo to change voltage or FSB.

cheers,

Col

For an answer to that question just look at the price history of the pIII katmais and PII. They still cost pretty what they did when they were discontinued. Hell the coppermines are cheaper than katmais.

Hi, Col --

PIII prices should continue to fall somewhat but they will bottom out at some point and begin to rise a bit as supplies dwindle. I'm sure that there will be plenty of Coppermines around for a while, yet. I have no guess as to how much lower they will go, though.

As far as voltage is concerned, the FCPGA Coppermine PIII at 667 operates at a Vcore of 1.65 with the exception of cC0 stepping 667's which operate at 1.70 and most PIII 1 GHz CPU's operate at a Vcore of 1.70. And of course there's an exception here too, as cD0 1Ghz cpu's operate at 1.75. You're motherboard SHOULD adjust the voltage accordingly, but I'm not 100% sure on that. You may want to contact Dell and see if the MB in your Optiplex will support the PIII as far as voltage goes.
