OT: Perseid meteor shower tonight

METEOR ALERT: The Perseid meteor shower is underway and should reach its peak during the next 24 hours. Forecasters say the best time to look is during the dark hours before dawn on Tuesday, August 12th. The glaring Moon sets around 2:00 a.m., and that's when the Perseids could appear in numbers as high as 60 per hour. The best displays will be seen from rural areas with dark skies.

If it's clear in your area, just look up 🙂

Thanks for the heads-up!
It was mostly cloudy in my place - but in a crack in the clouds at around 2 am I saw at some 7 "shooting" stars ... Forecast: mostly clowdy for the few days ...🙁

I should have gone out, I'm usually up late enough anyways. its so far a drive to any where I can get a good look at the sky though.

Next shower I'll go... hopefully... 🙂

I was traveling on I 695 near Baltimore on 8/11/08 around 8:45PM and a very low meteorite streaked across the sky from east to west, glowing very bright before it fizzled out and disappeared, leaving a bit of smoke/vapor in its trail. Exhilarating is the best word to describe the sight.

Meteor showers are worthwhile events to watch...in particular, there's a shower every November, the Leonids, that put on a very good show. Here's a list of this year's remaining showers. The moon phase plays a big role in how many meteors you'll see. Bright moons obscure all but the brightest ones.

Name Date of Peak Moon Phase

Orionids October 21, morning Rises around 1 a.m.
Leonids November 17, morning Rises late evening
Geminids December 13, evening Full Moon

Thanks for the list jonesthewine!

Its good to see we've got a couple left, even if the moon won't be aggreable.
