As some of you know I have had some tough work in October and it was supposed to have ended before November 3. Well life is not so easy.

I was prepared to finish my temporary assignment when my chief called me and said that I have to step up and the assignment as chief medical officer for two other units (in addition to the one I am leading) - that is in effect giving me an almost tripled work load. The reason? Not a nice one - one of my colleagues has messed up big time and was more or less dismissed. :(
One of the units is our emergency psychiatric ward. This has resulted in working days of 12 or more hours a day. I am very grateful that my fiancée has stepped in and helped greatly with all the work around the house and the kids ...

As if that was not sufficiently complicated ...
The renovation of my home was done as planned, but unfortunately not to my satisfaction. The heating works OK, but there are some small leaks here and some there, the efficiency was not as good as promised. The contractors were very good about the problems - they fixed all I wanted ASAP, but the efficiency of the system remained below specification. In the end they had to replace the whole unit - and then all was well.

And then the most wonderful house - a house I have wanted to buy for the last 2 years come up for sale! It fits our needs perfectly, is of great quality, my fiancée was enchanted by it - so we bought it. That took quite a few hours ;) of work ... but it is ours now and we will move March 1.

Most of this is great - my current home has gained a lot in value due to the work I have done and will pay for more than 60% of the new house so the mortgage will be OK, the kids and fiancée and her kids are very happy, so am I.

But I am so tired - pushing 12 hours-days, dealing with contractors and real estate agents, banks and such people is quite exhausting. Sleeping does not help I have to get time off.

When celebrating my birthday in October my friends have given me a great present: a month long trip to Australia. What we are going to do I do not know yet, But I would like to travel around and am thus asking for ideas ... renting a mobile home, staying somewhere at the Great Barrier Reef, visiting friends ...

All knowledge is appreciated - and ideas, addresses and so on ...

This is the explanation of my absence during November and my continued absence until middle of January - my crunchers will crunch on, all the time, but I will probably not have the time to be around. So: it is not due to lack of enthusiasm or willingness; but this is real life . It will become better ... :D

Hey Peter, good to read from you again. Sounds like a lot of work you have going on these days. If you're really interested, I'll meet a couple of friends on Saturday who just spent 5 weeks in Australia, driving around in a mobile home. I could ask them for their route and stops, if you want me to.

:)

@ all the TA-mates: Thanks! :D

Ok Peter, here we go: (a good map to follow the locations is here. This basically is a 5 weeks trip around eastern Australia.

DISCLAIMER: No guarantee about the names of these places! I'm not too good at Ausi spelling!

  • Good rental companies for motor homes are: Maui, Britz, Apollo. Do rent the motor home in advance, from Sweden. It's cheaper, insurance, fees and taxes will be significantly lower. A good recommendation is to stay your first and your last night in a hotel. The stations for giving back the motor homes sometimes are a good way off from the airport and if you keep the car till the last day, you'll basically waste your last day driving around in taxis, giving back the car and waiting at the airport.
  • Your flight will be really long, maybe up to 24 hours, with up to two stop overs. Some flight companies offer real stop overs, so you might spend a day in Dubai, Singapore or wherever you company stops over. I don't know if you'll go with you kids, but if yes, then that might be a good idea, to shorten the ?I'm-locked-up-in-a-plane?-time.
  • There's a really cool thing in Australia: public barbecue stations all along the road and at camping sites. No fee, no charge. There's either a gas barbecue or a electric one. Just buy meet and use them!
  • Clothing wise (may also depend on your time of trip, they went there two months ago):
First part: 15 to 20 °C, windy, cold water
Second part: HOT!!! Sunburn danger @ max, 40°C and above
Third part: cold, windy, sometimes down to 5°C at night.

FIRST PART: Brisbane to Cairns: 19 days by motor home

  • They flew into Brisbane with stop over in Dubai
  • To Noosa (nice beaches)
  • To Hervey Bay and Fraser Island (Whale watching, depending on season)
  • To Bundaberg
  • To Rockhampton and Capricorn Coast Yeppoon
  • To Engella National Park
  • To Mackay
  • To Townsville and the Whitsunday Islands, especially Magnetic Island
  • To the Atherton Tableland (near Cairns) and the Kuranda water falls
  • To Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef

SECOND PART: The Red Center: 5 days trip on four wheel drives with a guide (Sahara Tours)

  • From Cairns they flew into the Red Center and Alice Springs. The tour included:
  • Uluru-Kata-Tjuta National Park (Ayers Rock)
  • Kings Canyon
  • Western MacDonnell Ranges (Glen Helen, Ormiston Gorge)
  • Finke Gorge National Park
  • Palan Valley
  • Hermannsburg (it's an old German settler town :D )
  • Back to Alice Springs
  • From Alice Springs, every Tuesday and Thursday (only these days), there's a train called ?The Ghan? leaving to Adelaide. It's a 20 hours ride through the Simpson Desert and well worth the trip, 'cause you see a lot of awesome landscapes and sceneries, much more than from a plane. Just keep in mind that the train only goes two times a week.

THIRD PART: Adelaide to Melbourne: 10 days by motor home
  • Arrival by train in Adelaide
  • To Kingston SE
  • From there into the back country and into Grampians National Park
  • To Warrnambool
  • From there the Great Ocean Road (with the 12 Apostles) to Melbourne
  • last night in hotel
  • flight home with stop over in Singapore

Hope that helps you a bit (or a lot  )!

Christian

EDIT: I forgot to mention: They had a blast with their trip and when I asked them, they couldn't remember any instance that really scared them, offended them or was just bad. 5 weeks of joy and fun, in other words. :D

Thanks BMC, for a great description and some really good hints. :D
It is quite hard to rent a car (especially a mobile home) over the Christmas season - but I still have 5 days before I leave.
Most of the arrangements are secured ... and I am really looking forward to this trip.

Thanks, TeAm-mates, for all your good wishes. I'll let you know, when I can, haw things are.
We will be staying @ the Lady Elliot Island, a diver's paradise. There is one problem (ok a comparatively small one): the only internet connection is by satellite - and the cost is almost prohibitive ... So I'll post when ever I get to an Internet Café or to a hot spot in the bigger cities :)

The comps will be crunching on. I hope thet they will manage well for a whole month without baby-sitting ... OTOH: they have managed OK for 3 weeks.
I'll report on that too when I am back.
