Well I can say only from my experience with running Quake 2 and Quake 3 that I have had this problem in both Win98 and Win2k. You might find what your looking for here: http://www.geforcefaq.com. I have had this on both a TNT and my GeForce2.

Another idea would be to try backing down on the over-clocking of the chips and see if that makes any difference too.

Yeah, tried that - no help tho. Besides if overclocking were a problem I think I'd see it on the one that's a P3 700e @ 1002mhz ;) ALso not a problem on the box with the cel300a @ 504mhz. Only trouble is on this one that is the P3 700e @ 868mhz.
I know some people don't respect much of the overclocking deal, but that is not the cause of this problem. That box is the most stable of my three, and it runs the games fine, except for the inability to make them lighter or darker. Like I said, this is irrespective of speed, same issue at 700mhz.
Maybe it's a Win2K pro thing? Win2K server with a GF2 has no troubles, but maybe Win2K with TNT2 does?

Oh, don't get me wrong.. I used to not OC anything, but now I don't mind doing it on some of my machines; still, over-clocking is the first thing I disable when encountering a problem. As for the Win2K aspect, I doubt that the OS is the problem, as that(Win2K) is what most of my oc'd dual-cpu boxes are running w/o any issues in fact, one of my boxes is a Dual P3-700@966 with a 32meg TNT2 card in it and Win2K Professional installed - no problems encountered.

Ok, that's cool. I also thought of the stress factor, so one of the first things I checked was how it acted at standard speeds.
It's got to be something about the software chemistry, I just can't quite put my finger on it. Thanks anyway NWM.

Go into the display properties/settings/advances/GeForce/additional properties/color correction and increase the gamma until you have the desired appearence.

Increasing gamma there does change it in 2D but not in 3D.

I fixed this problem by using PowerStrip to adjust the refresh rate on the monitor.
Believe me I tried a lot of stuff, I even installed the latest Nvidia beta driver 1080.
It turns out that when I set this thing to a certain refresh rate the brightness adjustment in 3D games works. How strange is that?
