I know there are lots of network guru's here in the DC forum. Maybe one of you can help. I have 3 pc's on a home network thru a cable router. All 3 running XP. The problem is, I cannot access shared folders on one of the pc's. The folders are shared and they do appear in "My Network Places" on the other 2 pc's. When I try to access the folders, I get this:

\\shared folder's name is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Not enough server storage is available to process this command.

I've checked all the settings a gazillion times and can't find a problem. I know the network is working because the folders appear on the other pc's, I just can't access them. Any suggestions at all, no matter how insane, are welcome. I've spent hours on this and have no idea at all what to do next.

EDIT: All hail Cardassia! I tried the Gul's suggestion and changed the IRPStackSize from 11 to 15 on all three pc's. All network anomolies are gone. Everything is working normally again. All hail the Gul Dukat! :D :D :D :D

Ya got me. Sounds like you ( and me ) are missing something little and stupid. Only thing I can think of is someting having to do with permisions and users. Such as a user not having the ability to connect. Have you tried logging in as admin on both systems?

You must make sure that the username/ww that you log in on you're pc is the same as the user/ww on the other pc's.
Then you can go to the properties of the folder and change the rights of the folder.
And the other thing you could try is to map a network drive. Right click my computer and select Map network drive.
There you can log in on a different username if liked..

Evadman,

You're on the right track. Assuming you don't have an NT server or 2000 server acting as a domain controller, you have to create an account with the same name on each system in order to access shared resources.

If for some reason that doesn't do the trick, you should be able to connect to the resource as the administrator of the computer you are attempting to connect to.

I don't have XP, but I do have Win2KPro which is close.

1. Check the Share permissions (Permissions button on the Share tab) make sure all user(s) have correct permissions set.
2. Check the Security tab permissions (they can be different than the Share permissions) make sure all user(s) have correct access set.
3. Are you running software firewall on the PCs such as ZoneAlarm? I've had to go into ZoneAlarm and in the "advanced" section of the Security tab add the ip range of my internal network and check to allow traffic.

Evad: tried that
Cygor: what's a username/ww? I get the same "not enough server storage................." error trying to map.
Evil: create an account with the same name on each system? I didn't do that on the other 2 pc's and they share just fine.
Ray: I don't have a permissions button on the share tab on any of the 3 pc's. I do have a firewall, but all the pc's have been added to the control list

More info:
The bad pc has no problem using shared folders on the other 2 pc's. LAN gaming works just fine on all 3 pc's.

Edit: Turned off simple file sharing. That makes the permissions button appear. All the permissions were granted correctly. Made no difference. Turned the simple file sharing back on.

Even more info:

Shared folders do not even appear in Network Places anymore on any pc. Not even on the pc that has them shared! It's like the pc couldn't care less that I'm trying to share the folders.

Maggotry,

Do you have simple sharing turned on?

- In Windows Explorer, go to Tools - Folder Options
- Click on the View Tab and the very last option is use Simple file sharing.

If you turn off simple file sharing, this will enable to Sharing tab that Ray mentioned.

BTW, do you have the guest account enabled on all three PCs? If this account is disabled, accessing shared folders can be a problematic.

Just a couple more suggestions. Keep us posted!

Double check that in My Network Places, for the LAN connection properties, that File & Printer Sharing is still enabled.

Also, disable the firewall on all 3 PCs and see if that makes a difference.

Maggotry:

If you're comfortable playing with the registry, use the registry editor to navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters

and doubleclick on IRPStackSize. For WinXP the value should be 15 (default). Set it to 15 if it is not this value. If IRPStackSize does not exist, create it using type DWORD and set the decimal value to 15.

Reboot the PC (you might want to check all three PCs) and see if it helps. There were reports of this exact error being caused by various software packages (Norton, among others) resetting this value too low.

Good luck,
Dukat

Ray: Yes, it is still enabled. I may try to remove then reinstall it. :)
Edit: Tried disabling firewall too. No help.

Gul: I checked the key you mentioned. It does exist and is set to 11 on all 3 pc's. Since 2 of the pc's work fine, and the bad pc can access the other 2 just fine, then I assume this isn't the problem.

Thanks for all the help. We're heading to Galveston for the weekend. I'll check back Sunday night and try everything else that gets posted. It looks like either a reinstall of XP or a call to M$ on Monday morning. They still charge $35 for help?

Maggotry, 11 is an incorrect value on all three XP machines. I'm willing to bet that you installed some piece of software on all of your machines that rewrote the default value from 15 to 11. 11 is the default value for WinNT and W2K machines, but is incorrect for WinXP. I'd be willing to bet that if you reset the value to 15 on all three machines and then rebooted all of them that this particular networking problem would disappear. The too low setting supposedly causes intermittent networking problems.

Before you go through the trouble of reinstalling, why not change the setting? If it doesn't work, you can always go back into the registry and change the value back to 11 on all three machines.

BTW, I found the info for this by doing a search at groups.google.com using the keywords "not enough server storage xp" if you'd like to take a look for yourself...:)

I'll try it when I get back from Galveston, Gul. And thanks for the info. I do appreciate your searching around a bit for me. I'll try that search too.
