Well, I'm in a bit of a problem about which to choose.!

I want a NetMD from Sony here or a Creative Nomad II MG w/ 196MB (That's 64MB Base, with a 128MB card). Both cost around the same price ($150) new, and I'm kinda iffy about which to choose. Both have their positives, and I need the people of AT to help make my decision. I don't want a Mp3/CD player either, because it's just too big. I'm in this for size, which is why no Jukeboxes either.

Minidiscs ...
------------------
- MDLP means they can hold 2x a 74min CD (that's around 148 minutes). I know there's MDLP4 but that just sacrifices too much quality.
- Transfer rates are 32x...not bad!
- Cheap minidiscs..around $2.
- Battery is good
-Comes with recording for voice

Mp3
------------------
- Smaller
- Lighter
- Better battery life
- 196MB @ 128kb/s = around 196min. That's good.. :)
- Better shell (Magnesium compared to MD's aluminium...at least for that model shown above)
- comes with radio and recording for voice

Please, ATers! Help me out!! :D

Oh, No mp3/CD! :D

BTW, the Nomad II MG is only $113...the $150 is WITH the 128MB Card :)

I'm biased towards MD for the Cheap minidiscs..around $2. reason. I like my 12-disc minitower with different mixes that I can wake up to and pick from -- that's really convenient for me. Plus the MD is still almost a niche tech in the audio world that's extra kudos points. :)

Hmm. well, the NetMD 505 doesn't support Optical In - only higher models like the 707 do. Something to consider. As for portability...the mp3 player is lighter, smaller and such...

And I only have about 1 gig of songs, only maybe about 30 I listen to frequently - so ...:) still caught up. I still like the idea of Mp3's tho, but that's cause I've had an MD (MZ-R55) for a while now, and I just got a 64mb Yepp.

Frankly, with the improvements they've made in transfer speed to get MP3s on your MD player, go with MD. I don't know anything about specific models, but all Sony products tend to be overpriced...

I have a Creative Nomad II (not the MG) - it also supports 128 MB SmartMedia cards. I love it. If you decide to get an MP3 player from Creative, get this model and not the MG. The lack of a useful LCD screen alone should sway you this way.

Edited to add the below information.

If the approximated battery life of that MD player is correct, there's no way in hell a Nomad II MG would match that. Expect 10-15 hours for the MG, tops. Accessing that memory card takes a lot out of it.

Good luck!

yep go with the md until harddrive players get faster uploads and cheaper prices

but SAFETY FIRST!

Make sure all the music files you upload are 100% legally owned by you!

...But mp3's always had that fast transfer speed - eg) at LP2, it would take 15 minutes to upload a full MD

The MG has a really nice LCD screen on the front - maybe it's a difference model you're talking about.

That's true, but doesn't a single AA battery run an mp3 player for 10 hours?

<< ...But mp3's always had that fast transfer speed - eg) at LP2, it would take 15 minutes to upload a full MD >>

Getting songs uploaded quickly enough to leave the house on time is a problem I have quite often. Over the USB port into my Nomad II, it averages about 10 seconds a song. I'm not saying that MD is superior now, just that it's come a long way in this respect.

<< The MG has a really nice LCD screen on the front - maybe it's a difference model you're talking about. >>

The LCD screen on the Nomad II MG is almost a layover from the first generation Creative Nomad. On the basis of that and the added FM tuner on the Nomad II, I gave the Nomad II MG a big pass.

For detailed information on the differences between the Nomad II players, see this page on Nomadness.net.

<< That's true, but doesn't a single AA battery run an mp3 player for 10 hours? >>

Correct. But did you see the Net MD Walkman's boasted times?

Battery Life (approx.):
SP Mode (Normal Stereo):
1 x ?AA? Alkaline 9 hrs Record, 40 hrs Playback
LP2 Mode:
1 x ?AA? Alkaline 13 hrs Record, 48 hrs Playback
LP4 Mode:
1 x ?AA? Alkaline 16 hrs Record, 56 hrs Playback

That kind of beats the hell out of the 10 hours I can barely squeeze out of my Nomad II.

There's over 2x the votes for mp3..but everyone says MD's are better. Everything is true...then again cost!
:( MD's then? ....The new NetMD's with digital recording are a lot of money!

But I still like the MG! :D, and it's cheaper now.

ive got MD on my home stereo but no portable player. i do however have a portable MP3 player which i love.

but id go with the MD if i were you. the battery life on my MP3 player kills me. MD is lightyears ahead.
also i miss having the ability to switch between discs. when i leave the house what i have on my MP3 player is what im stuck with.

MD is about the same size as MP3, player wise. and with MDLP4 holding about 320min, its no problem to have a massive amount of muscis available to you buy carrying two MDs besides the one in your player. expandability is unlimited while MP3 is limited to your memory cards.

go MD!

Listen to the people who have real-world experience with these things, man! I own and love my MP3 player and keep telling you to do MD instead; Spendthrift seems to know what he's talking about too. The rest of the people I wager are just voting for MP3 because it's cooler (it really is, people take a double-take at the LCD screen). :)

Damn...... Now I'm really in a jumble :( I really like mp3s tho. If i do get an MD, i'd get a MZ-505... but that only has analog recording? What do you think about the 505? Or should I splurge and get a 707? :) Thanks

i got that mzn1 sony netmd thing in mid December right when it came out in Japan. it's true, the software does crash now and then, it's not rock solid if you want that, and i didn't read the manual to learn how to use the software, i felt it could be more streamlined and tight.

the player itself is nice, and the idea of limitless MD cassettes is nice. Sharp has their 'netmd' portable player/recorder as well since maybe a month ago.

i would go with a MD player though, but i do dislike the SONY software somewhat... but it does do its job.
