OT: Main computer freezing at night

My computer has hard-frozen the last two nights. Just green lines running across the monitor in the morning, and no production while it was frozen. 🙁

I have a 😱 Compaq 😱 Athlon XP 2200+ @ the default 1800MHz.

Which of the following looks most amiss to you? (Cut'n'paste from Sandra):

Board Temperature : 34.0°C / 93.2°F
CPU Temperature : 57.0°C / 134.6°F

Voltage Sensor(s)
CPU Core Voltage : 1.62V
Aux Voltage : 2.56V
+3.3V Voltage : 3.31V
+5V Voltage : 4.92V
+12V Voltage : 11.86V
-12V Voltage : 0.56V
-5V Voltage : 4.05V
+5V Standby Voltage : 4.92V

I've been thinking about a new PSU ever since I got the machine, but is heat a more likely cause?

I've had such a problem... Turned out to be the fan on the gfx-card running too slow. 🙁
I replaced the fan --> No problem anymore. 🙂

EDIT:
BTW. it was a geforce2, in case it matters... Can you check the temp on your gfx-card?

Graphics card is integrated on the motherboard. S3 ProSavage DDR. No temp listed, but I doubt that's the problem.

Edit: And did the rest of the computer freeze up when the graphics card failed?

These problems that occurs so irregular really sux! If you can, maybe swop some ram, psu, or whatever is swoppable. Any swollen caps on the mobo maybe?

If you run with the case open, do the temps drop? And, does it make it through the night?
While the CPU temp is within spec, its still a bit high.

Yes, usually it did...

Bad 5 volt Rail, new PS with beefy 5V should fix it.

-5V Voltage : 4.05V should be much closer to -5vdc ... .95 volts is a BIG difference
+5V Standby Voltage : 4.92V

Just a thought ...

Sandra is not always giving correct info, especially on Voltages, so wouldn't trust any of the reported numbers. Instead, take a look in the BIOS.

Oh, and just a couple of examples of how bad Sandra is:
On one computer, -5V is reported as -14.91V :Q
On another, -5V is reported as 0.13V, and +12V as 9.18V...

Now, the -5V and -12V is AFAIK not normally used for anything any longer, but +12V is used for many parts of a system, and wouldn't run with so low voltage. Looking in bios or using a voltmeter, the actual is as it should be. 🙂

I don't think my BIOS can actually read those things. Anyone know where to get a more useful (e.g. can modify ram timings, etc.) BIOS for a Compaq?

I noticed the HD light had been on when it crashed before. I had an auto-backup running every night, so I modified the batch I was using to spin up the hard drive I back up onto, then wait a couple minutes before doing the backup. That seemed to help last night; no crash, so I'm crossing my fingers. 🙂
