OT: Laptop opinions

Posted this a few days ago in the general hardware but got zero responses.

What are your opinions of this laptop and this price from newegg ?

Thanks,

Sale ends tomorrow and trying to decide if I want to buy.

lmao, $800 for a celey? Are you on bloody crack?. I don't have a lot of time, but keep your eye on the hot deals forum and head over to gottadeal.com for some hotdeals 101.

if I want to buy

don't, you should be getting a better than half decent centrino for that price.

I admit to not knowing much at all via laptops. This helps. I thought the Celron M was the centrino. I'm glad I posted before buying.

Sorry I was so blunt. The Celeron is not the centrino at all. $800 is cutting it close, but $100 more you should be getting a nice centrino set-up. It really comes down to if you need it right now or can you wait. I checked briefly and saw a Dell 700m for just over $900 with a 1.8 centrino, 512mb ram, 40gb hard drive, dvd/cdrw combo. I dunno how that compares to other deals b/c I havn't been watching the laptop prices.

Ill be back later and do a search to see If I can find something better than the 700m

FYI: centrino is not a cpu. it should be Platinum M 1.8ghz.

Ok. That makes better sense now. I like that acer Da Whim .. looking at now...

That's the thing I'm trying to understand a bit more of ... the LCD options for laptops. Looks like that acer DaWhim link to has a nice clear one ... what do you guys think ?

If we're getting technical...platinum eh? lol. Pentium M = centrino

For a $1k, I would personally rather have the HP DV notebook.

For $950

1.8 Pentium M
5125mb DDR
80GB HD
DVD/CDRW combo

For $800

3.06 P4 w/HT
512mb DDR
60GB HD
DVD/CDRW combo

Those are both dells, that CPQ from OD is decent though you would want to upgrade to the 64bit and 512mb most likely.

Yet another correction Pentium M doesnt necessarily equal a Centrino. A laptop with Centrino technology is a combination of the Pentium M, Intell 855 chipset, and Intel 802.11 b/g.

The title Pentium-M label was around long before Centrinos were even talked about. Although the true statement is Pentium M for a Centrino laptop incorrect marketing labels have called the Pentium III M and Pentium 4 M a "Pentium M".

So if you want to make sure ur looking at a centrino you have to look for the the centrino logo or for it to specifically say "Centrino".

Thats why on commercials you hear them say new laptop with centrino technology not "centrino processor"

True, but you will find nothing else that is correctly called a Pentium M.

If its a centrino, it has a pentium M...if its a pentium M, its in a centrino...

Lurk in Hot Deals until another Dell deal comes up, then jump on it. That laptop is garbage compared to what you can score from Dell.

If its a centrino, it has a pentium M...if its a pentium M, its in a centrino...

Wrong. Pentium M processors can still be in non-Centrino laptops... for example, I'm currently typing this on a Dell Inspiron 8500 with a 2.4 Ghz P4-M which is not Centrino.
