OT - KVM

Hey guys I just wanted to share this with you. I have been looking around for a decent and cheap KVM. I tried one of the types we use at work and it did not work for my resolution plus it has a big clunky dial on the front that I did not like. Well I have the need now for one in my garage and resolution and clarity does not matter so I found one online at buy.com. It's a linksys 2 port KVM. Just got it today and hooked it up at work. It's a nice little unit. Very smooth transition when I switch and you can hit the CTRL key twice and it will switch that way too. Not bad for $32.95 with cables. They will even ship it out for FREE! Here is the link if anyone is interested. Link I actually bought 2 so I can set up a linux learning machine in my bedroom so I will see if it will handle the resolution that I run at 1280x1024. 🙂

Anyone else have experience with this KVM?

I could really use one when I go to college next year, thinkin about picking this one up!

WITH CABLES?!?!?!?! :Q

that is a DEAL!!

i just ordered one with the "Bill me Later" option!!! gack! i better go sell something on For Sale/Trade to get some money to pay the bill when it gets here

BTW, they have a four port KVM very similar to this one for just a little more!! gack!! :Q

That *is* a deal. I'd always thought the IOGear 4-port KVM w/cables for about $110 was a deal but this...even switching with the keyboard. ROCKS

The linksys KVMs are fantastic!.. I have 3 of em.. 2 of the 4 port and 1 of the 2 port models.
my favorite feature is that they don't need a power supply 🙂

Do you see any difference between your desktop with and without the KVM inbetween? Also, do you know if Logitech trackballs will work through it?

I had a KVM a while back but it was cheap quality and caused a little bit of a shadow on the image. My trackball wouldn't work through it either. 🙁

When I tested it here at work a little while ago I saw no difference in the desktop. I have no idea about the trackball. Sorry. That link has some customer feedback, maybe someone there has an opinion on that. I did read that there were some issues with the Logitech Mouseman. I have a ligitech cordless mousman optical, and I am praying that it does not disable my thumb button. I use it all the time! Oh well. Small price to pay and if it bothers me too much, I will put my linux box in the front room and hook it up out there.

I see no difference on mine at all.. as for the trackball, it should work fine.

I bought this exact KVM a little over a year ago and absolutely loved it. Of course, I outgrew it when I added a third (and then fourth) computer to my office area so I upgraded to the Linksys 4-port model.

I can't recommend these KVMs highly enough. The CTRL hot key is the best part of the deal and I haven't noticed any discernable drop in picture quality when using my 17" LCD through this KVM. One drawback is that I did lose the use of the thumb button on my Logitech Mouseman Wheel optical 🙁

Now that you mention it.. I was trying to get the thumb button on my MS Intellimouse Explorer to work last night.. never even came to mind that it may be the KVM.. no biggie, I never really use it anyway.

I've been using this over a year. It's good, but not great.

I see ghosting at 1600x1200. I even see some at 1280 with an nVidia card.

Hmmm. I may have to knock my res down a touch. Will found out. Thanks for the heads up.

I've got 2 of the little 2-port Linksys KVMs here at work. They've been great units. When I had to get a 4-port unit I bought an IOGear 4-port KVM w/cables for $139.99 at Microcenter. To switch between ports you do a CTRL+SHIFT+Port#(1-4), then Enter. It supports up to 1920x1440, and it has a neat feature that continually scans between the 4 ports, like a security monitor, which may come in handy in a datacenter type of environment.

Oh, here's the LINK if you wanna look.

Some of the ghosting issues at higher resolutions can also be caused by cables. Try attaching your 2 cables together without the KVM, and see if you still get ghosting. If you do, then you need a better quality of Video Cable. I bought a VGA extension cable from Black Box. It was expensive, but very high quality, and I had no ghosting.

Keep in mind folks that that 4port Linksys KVM does NOT include the cables. 🙁 But the 2port with cables for that price is a steal! 😀

I do have the 4port model at home - I use it with my fleet of S@H/D2OL rigs - works great - I've not had any issues at all.

I went all out and got this. I haven't been impressed though. It says it does emulation but it seems to be more like fast switching and you can forget about playing games with it. If you hold a key in for a while (needed to move forward or fly planes in some games) it will work at first and then stop and you have to take your finger off and then get back on it quick. Actually I've been thinking about selling it.

How would the one you got work in games and such?

If you're referring to me, I have no idea. I've been using my 4port Linksys solely for the DC rigs - never had any reason to hook it up to gaming rigs. 😕

Okay, I'm convinced. I ordered one. Great price for a KVM with cables. 🙂

Thanks MoFunk & everyone else for comments!

Oh nevermind. I just noticed what was said about the thumb buttons on the Intellimouse Explorer, I can't live without mine.

I hooked up my first one the other day.. man what a nice convenience.. I need a second 4 port one.. looks like a pretty nice KVM.

I?ve got 2 of the Linksys 2 port KVM?s, for the money they work great but the crtl key switching is a bit of a problem when marking multiple files or using key combo?s when you get in a hurry. Other than that I got no complaints with it. I also have a Dlink 4 port KVM that I like a little better, it uses a double tap of the Scroll Lock key followed by pressing 1 thru 4 depending on which PC you want, (someone finally found a use for scroll lock), but for $32 the Linksys is hard to beat.

My Belkin works the same way... double scroll lock key.. or a push button on the cube.

LOL at Slapstick...

First thing I do when I get a new keyboard is take off the scroll lock key.... In a few years I'll have enough to make up a keyboard comprised of just scroll lock keys.. Imagine the possibilities...

😱
