(OT kinda) Ram questions inside

I have a 3.2 prescott running in dual mode 512 corsair xms ddr400.

The problem:
I run constantly over 600-700 mb of ram usage

The Solution:

I have a 512 mb stick of corsair xms pc3000 ram.
I could take a 256 stick out and use it in the computer that the 512 stick sits in.(it only uses 160 mb of ram)

I could then stick the 512 pc3000 and the 256 ddr 400 together in single mode

The Question:
Will this work?
Will I suffer badly in performance?

Thank you
Mike

I think that this would work but you will suffer some major hit on your performance, as the PC3200 will only run on PC3000 speed and the dual cha is pretty important for a P4 to perform at its best. An AMD system wouldn't mind that much, but you P4 will suffer.

it SHOULD work just fine but will obviously not run dual channel. i run dual channel mode on my p4's and honestly i dont see a huge speed increase at all. if you are needing that much ram, id go ahead and go for it. worst thing that could happen is you try it and you dont like it so you pull it back out.

Yeah, you have nothing to loose, except for an hour or less trying it out, so go for it. 🙂

Oh yeah, btw, I don't see how you're going to be giving up performance, since single channel vs. dual channel difference is much less than hard disk-based paging file vs. RAM.
