OT (kinda): Geez Windows Update sucks lately!

I don't know if this is OT or not. I'm installing the OS/proggies on a system and it's going to be a SETI client so decide for yourself.

Anyway... Windows Update sucks lately. If it's accessable at all the success rate of downloading a complete update is about 25%. Sometimes it flys through the download (we're in a T1) but other times it trickles in and times out or the download stops and the update window starts flashing real fast. Yesterday I started getting that "Page can not be displayed error" and had to go through the PITA process of clearing out the Windows Update info. Took me most of the morning just to get the updates for Win2K/Office2K.

Thanks Micro$oft... :|

I know EXACTLY what you're talking about. I've had to install the SP2 update for Windows 2000 (as well as others) on 4 different computers now. It's really a PITA when I have to wait anywhere between 30 seconds and 1/2 hour for the same program to download (on the same speed connection). Way to go MS! Keep things reliable like always! :frown:

I really wish MS would allow our company to purchase some update CD's. Even if they're not exactly current it would save downloading the very old updates. I wouldn't mind downloading a few MB's then. As it is I spend most of the OS install in the patching process. I've even tried going to their download side and putting the patches on the network. However, if you look at the stuff on the download site and the stuff in Windows Update, they don't match! :frown:

If you check news.com, there's a story about WindowsUpdate being broken due to an Engineer's UBF; hence why you're having so many problems.:(

I heard that Windows XP's automatic update feature was causeing problems because it was downloading updates too often and most of the time the updates hurt performance. However, mine has yet to notify me (yes I have it set to notify before installing an update) that there have been any updates availible. Micro$haft at it again.

You guys turn on automatic update in XP for Microsoft update? Geez, you like to live on the edge don't ya? :p

Not me. I've done too many updates to ever trust them to provide consistent quality controlled tested and working updates.

What's really bad and takes forever is to install Win2KPro, Install SP2, Install Security Updates, IE5.5Sp2, all patches, drivers, etc., THEN have to install Office2000, Sp2, patches, updates, etc. Man o Man it takes such a long time.

I had to do a clean install of everything, and it took almost all day....:(

I gotta get an image made of that install.
