OT: (Kind of) New Laptop

Alright all of you computer junkies 😉

The company wants to buy me an up-to-date laptop (is there such a thing?).

I've been looking at Dell, Comaq, IBM and Gateway pc's but I want to be sure there isn't anything else out there I haven't seen before.

1.2Ghz is the fastest I see out there, anyone seen different?

Tell me what you would by if you were given a "blank check". 🙂

Thanks!!

The new ECS i-buddy laptop's with Northwood P4's could be very good)and they seem cheap).

I'd want to see some reviews and make sure they cool properly first(they use desktop cpu's)

Try this on for size:

Winbook link

I buy Winbooks for our guys at work. They are great systems and you can usually save money when comparing them to Dells and Gateways with the same specs. Check it out!

I am a big fan of the Fujitsu notebooks. I don't know if they are the fastest on the planet but I haven't seen any more reliable than they are. The E series are nice machines that have some great added features and they come standard with a 3 year warranty.

We have a customer who took delivery on 200+ units 2 1/2 years ago and they have not had a single service call :Q

I am sure there are bigger and badder laptops but not many companies can tell you they made most of the stuff that is going into their laptop. Fujitsu can 🙂

Dude! Get a Dell!

I've an Inspiron 8100 PIII-M 1.0GHz with 384MB RAM and it crunches a WU in right about 5 hours. Not too shabby! The PIII-M has a 133MHz bus and a bigger cache.

On an interesting note Tom's has an advanced look at one of the new IBM P4 laptops here

You might want to check it out and see if a P4 will be worth the wait 🙂

I've never liked IBM laptops. Boss had one where I used to work and he had all kinds of problems with drivers. A colleague has one and she's always complaining about it. Toshibas are nice and well made but their speed always seemed to be lacking other mfrs. I've heard good/bad about HP but Dell's...always heard good stuff about them and I have no complaints about mine.

If you want a Dell all you need to do is find any of the many notebook resellers that sell Mitac and Twinnote based notebooks and you then "Dude you've got a Dell" Dell doesn't make a thing in their notebooks. They just pop in harddrives, processors and ram.

I am not a big IBM fan I was really suggesting that he look at the performance and see if waiting for a P4 would be worth it. I still stand by the Fujitsu laptops as being better built than any other brand of notebook I have seen.

Service and support....says a lot for going with Dell 🙂

well the fact that dell's service and support is reputed to suck ass unless you are a large corporate buyer with 10 or more units, well.. ok dell might just suck. they are a bigger company than twinhead so i guess you'll be able to count on having your crappy service for longer. i'm hearing that people have to wait on hold for an hour now. and the onsite service is just some guy who comes over and installs parts, he doesnt even troubleshoot. i dunno read zdnet forums.

if you want a really nice looking laptop, get the compaq presario 2800. 2 pounds lighter than the dell, and faster if you think the radeon 7500 is better than the gf4mx440 which it supposedly is

True although my experience has been that they are rather hit and miss depending on who answers the phone. I have had experiences where calls have taken 3-4 times the length they should because the guy on the other end had to go through his tech flowchart. I like the Fujitsu notebooks because the rarely need service or support 🙂

Could be their service is slipping but I've never had to use it. A buddy of mine had to have his screen replaced (due to a major problem caused by his three-year-old son and a sharp object :Q ) and he was pretty pleased with the service.

the dell forums are great.. thats the forums i used to go to before i found these. Most of the people there know alot about Dell comps and some of the guys are like Dell Reps or somehting.

you can look here 😉

Seriously, i am using a company Dell laptop and there's nothing wrong with it. Just can't stand the grinding fan from WU crunching, hehe. 😀 However, three of my co-workers have to have their mainboards(same model as mine) replaced because their keyboards don't respond.

I have heard of Dell notebooks catching on fire. I think I read that on the register some time last year.

I spoke with my Fujitsu rep today and he told me they would have mobile P4 notebooks launching in 2 weeks and mobile Athlon 4s launching in about 6 weeks. 🙂

I have to agree with "Tom's Hardware" on his comment about laptop hard drives being slow. They just can't get past current speeds and get us something more comparable to desktop performance. (Slow 5400 rpm drives) :|

Great links though! I had no idea laptops were out with a P4 in them! Damn thats cool! 😀 (About $4,000.00 though, ouch!!)
Prices have come down though. The one I have now is getting passed on after two years worth of /cough rc5,seti, etc.. /cough, work, and that ran me $3,500.00

We'll see. I put a $3,900.00 Dell proposal on the boss's desk. Let see if it flies and then my herd groweth! 🙂

Just called Dell and put into production the P4 1.7Ghz, but check this out, it probably won't be ready until April 15th!! A whole month !

Keep my fingers crossed and hope it ships early! 😀

Thanks for everyone's help! I can't wait to see this thing rock!!
