OT Just a question. I have a MF200R ARGB Fan that the wires snapped from the main connector on the center of the fan. Its a clean cut. I was wondering how hard would it be for someone to solder it who has only seen others do it but has never done it himself?
Its just 3 wires, I feel like it should be pretty simple no? I found a small jewelry I believe 60 or 80 watts solder pen I think I am going to buy because Its cheap. And Also I don't know how thick should the metal spool I buy should be?

If you guys could give me some pointers? Its just a small experiment for like $15. If I can repair the 200mm FAN then its good! if not it was a fun experiment but a little guidance would help.

Thanks!

Sorry it took this long had to do something View attachment 84168View attachment 84168
You'll have to back-trace where each wire connects to the motherboard, what it's assignment is...5v, etc...don't want to fry things by connecting the wires in the wrong place...and Coolermaster support MIGHT be able to help with that. Otherwise, the basic solder work doesn't look too difficult.

you mean each of the 3 wires correct? not every single wire wire cause each of hte 3 black sleeves has like 30 little wires

I honestly don't think its worth the hassle after all. I think I'll just spend $30 and buy a new one.

the soldering gun is only $10 I am just not sure if I could do it. Never done this before. The fan new is like $33 or $35 with tax
You also have to get solder, solder sucker or wick to remove old solder.

Unless you plan on needing to solder more stuff in the future, yeah just buy a new fan. And a $10 soldering iron isn't going to be a good one.

You don't have anyone in your neighborhood with a soldering iron or anything? I remember when my neighbor had his AC go out, he did some research and found out that it was something that went bad on this little board, so he bought a new one and asked me if I could solder it.

It took me about 5 minutes to do the job and he was shocked/surprised but also not really, that it fixed the problem, and saved him a $600 bill from the HVAC guys.

A cheap solder pencil is never worth buying. You'll want to spend probably $100 minimum. So unless you want to do more with soldering, just get a new fan or borrow a soldering iron.

Edit: Oops, didn't notice the cut was right at the solder joint. Rest of post removed.

Meh, you can get small jobs done with a cheap POS soldering iron, I've done enough with mine.

Probably your best choice. Me, I'd keep the fan and maybe try to repair it...but I've already got a cheap pos soldering pencil and Weller gun. (also kind of a POS)

You can get a good weller for $20.

Usually the reason you can't melt solder is because you've ruined the tip. All the more reason not to spend a lot if just beginning.

Those wires should be easy enough to solder, I would just melt the existing solder and stick wires back in, should be good enough.

Having a cheap pen around is nice for "in the field" but I would highly recommend a proper solder station too, that actually lets you control the temperature.
