I know it's OT but I don't go to the other forums !!!!

I just got a deal on a Dell GX200, but it's only got 64Mb PC800, so is it worth upgrading now, or is the price of RDRAM det to drop soon ?

I'd like to throw a 256Mb stick in (it's only got 2 slots).

Soon as it's up (hopefully tonight, it'll be doing SETI)

cheers,

Col

Well, from what I've seen, RDRAM has been dropping relatively steadily the last month or two, sometimes a little burstier than others, but always going down. On the other hand, this past week has seen relatively no change (only on the order of a couple percent cheaper). It looks like RDRAM will cost you ~ 150 per chip for 256Mb RIMMS. Who knows if it will drop or rise for sure, The Inquirer is open to the possibility of DRAM rises, in the future (the premise being a cartel over seas). When/if this will impact RDRAM remains to be seen, but I believe that the two companies, Samsung, and Hynix, both produce more RDRAM than most other manufactures....but don't quote me on this last bit.

Thanks BK,

I've had a look around and I think I can get 128 for around £80 and 256 around £150...
I can use the box on win98 as is but I really want to put win2000 on it so I need that extra ram.

I might leave it a couple of weeks, see how the prices go..

cheers,

A local retailer here is selling 256MB of PC800 for $139 US dollars. Even adding in overseas shipping, that's quite a bit less than the price you listed of £150. Maybe worth having someone here in the US buy some for you?

That is a fair saving, I'll have a look at some of the US sites as you say...

I just bought upgrades for my sister-in-law's mac from the US..

Cost me $135 for 128Mb DIMM, 1 Mb VRAM and 512K cache..

The total over here was something like £400 ($500+)

We get ripped off....

That's what you get for living in the EU. VAT @ 17.5%. That's a sales tax on 99% of products for our US cousins.

Colin the best I could find was £66 for 128mb & £128 for 256mb @ dabs.com.

Hi Russ,

yeah, that's the cheapest I can find too, Dabs are pretty good....

It doesn't mention if it's ECC stuff though, and I know the 64Mb in there is ECC but I don't know if you can mix them or if my system takes non ECC..

Got some reading to do..

cheers,

It may also be that the dollar is especially strong at the moment, making parts appear cheap(er) in the US & more expensive in the rest of the world.
