I got a new Staples coupon in e-mail today, it was a 16 digit code. Is Staples going to begin monitering their coupon code more strictly?

Has anyone seen one of the new longer coupons, or heard anything about this?

Pothead, don't be so hasty!

Sluggo, yes I got one today and thought the same thing. It came as part of a general advertisement and damned sure is not a dividend code.

Yes, I have received one of the coupons with the long code - actually, it was on a $40 off $200 purchase coupon. However, a few days later, I received another coupon for a smaller amount (e.g. $10 off a $50 purchase) and the coupon had a 5-digit number. It does appear that Staples is "playing" around with their coupon methods. However, at this point, there doesn't appear to be any consistancy with what they're trying to do, so I wouldn't worry too much.

Ok.... to clear things up.

5 digit codes are good for all

16 digit codes are one time use. Which means they can only be used once online. However, dosen't mean you can't use it B&M, basically all cashiers do is select coupon type in code (which as far as I know isn't cross referenced against anything) and type in the value of the coupon. Somehow I think things will change to make it harder to distrubute codes to everyone else.

i got one of the long codes via email. As I tried to apply it gave me a message which concerns me. It said that this coupon can not be accepted because it is from a public bulletin board or forum. Is staples up to something?

I used one of these 16-digit coupons in store about a month ago without a problem. I printed out the email I got and took it to the store with me. The terms of the coupon said it could only be used once and when I handed it to the clerk he slowly but surely entered all 16 digits into the computer. Makes me believe it was a one-time use coupon, otherwise it would have only been 5 digits.

I'll clear up a little confusion:

5 digit codes are meant to be spread around and used by all: that's why they're used in special instant savings like the Warcraft 3 coupon which didn't work (because of the .04 price difference) and the typical $30 off $150 and the "Free bag with your first purchase of $70 or more on Staples.com"

16 digit coupons are NOT one time use. If it was, the $10 off $10 coupon would have only worked for one person and not the 15 million people who used it. They use a unique 16 digit coupon code for some coupons to track its use to see if people are abusing it or whatnot.

I might need a monitor or I would consider posting it all.
I haven't been to Staples to much since a store employee and a manager semi treated me like dirt when I asked about printers. Funny thing is that the store manager knows I have spent a grand at times espically on holiday sales. Seems they would want to make back some of there money on full retail priced products to make up for sale items, lost leaders, etc.

Yep and while you're at it sign up for the Business Rewards card. Even if you don't spend enough to get a check, you'll at least get coupons in the quarterly statement.

Good suggestion. However they used to include $$ off coupons with the quarterly statement, but the most recent statment I got only got coupons for specific items (Staples brands).

But I did get a check for $115 though!!! (from all of my work purchases and coping done at Staples :)).
