OT IDE vs SATA

I have all 4 IDE channels tied up with 2 HD's and 2 DVD/RW drives.
My question is: Can I install another drive on one of the SATA channels?
Or, is it part of the IDE channel?

Running out of space and would like to cache more WU's than I
can currently. (There, that puts it back OT)

That'd most likely be a yes. If you have any motherboard documentation around it should clearly say otherwise if that's the case but I don't see why it would be. What chipset would this be?

Edit: just reread, that may have been a bit confusing I meant yes to being able to install another drive, no to sata being part of the ide channel

It is an Asus A7N8X Deluxe. After reading the mobo book, it seems that I may
even be able to create a 2 disk raid. I think I will give it a try with a couple
of 80 gb drives.

You can. You can have up to 4 devices on the ide channels, and the SATA channels don't interfere with that. You should have no problems adding 1 (if not 2) SATA drives to your setup.

I have the same MB and I have 1, 120 gig sata drive, 1, 120 gig ata133, 1. 80 gig ata 133, 1 dvd drive and 1 52x cd burner all workings with no problem.
If you decide to use the sata drive as your boot drive and put an os on it unplug your ide drives before installing windows. After you finish with the install then plug your other drives back in.
You will need to put the sata drivers on a 3 1\2 disk and have the windows setup program install the drivers before window setup will see the sata drive.

Yep, you can use the SATA channels alongside the PATA channels

Just be thankful everybody didn't suggest getting 2 new Raptors for your RAID.

I'd suggest getting 2 new Raptors for your SATA raid
They're a little loud, but the performance boost is pretty nice (they're 10krpm western digital SATA drives)

I've been extremely happy with my Seagate SATA. People often praise how quiet it is compared to the Raptor, but I doubt I could hear the Raptor OVER THE SOUND OF MY 9 FANS.

?? I didn't have to, which windows are you talking about? XP picked my raptor up just fine

It did on fresh install of XP? Or did you just add the drives to an existant OS install. He was talking about if you do a fresh install of XP, you'd have to have the driver disk handy for the WinXP setup to recognize the drives (same as if you were to want to install WinXP on a SCSI drive).

Ronin is right, i had to do the same thing on my system, anyway you should get 2x WD Raptors RAID0!!! There so awsome i'd reccomend them to anyone, you don't know what ur missing out on

Funny, I swear I didn't have to put any driver disks in. And yes, this was a completely fresh install of XP with a new harddrive and nothing else in the system. We are talking about different chipsets, if that makes a difference. My sata controller is the ICH5.

Don't know about your MB but with the Asus A7N8X Deluxe that he has you do as least that was the only way I could get it to see the drive during setup and I have the same MB.

Possible. You'd have to slipstream the drivers into the i386 folder of your WinXP install via something like WinISO. You'd have to basically make an ISO out of your WinXP disk, open that ISO up with WinISO, place your drivers in the I386 folder, recompile the ISO and reburn.

Off the top of my head, I'm not sure if there's a subfolder in the I386 folder that you'd have to put it in (been a while since I've slipstreamed), but I think the base I386 folder is ok.
