I'm just giddy that I've finally finished this machine, and I have to post about it somewhere dang it. The machine that is my namesake, Fullmetal Chocobo, is now up and running and finished (for now). It is now named Xenon, since "Fullmetal Chocobo" was retired some time ago.

case: Enermax FS2300BB 23-bay server case
PSU: Antech Earthwatts 500w
mobo: Asus P5E-VM HDMI
CPU: Intel C2D E2140
hds: 8 x WD 750gb SE16
RAM: 4gb (2x2gb) OCZ PC2-800
RAID: Areca ARC-1220 RAID controller
video: onboard

She isn't crunching yet, as I want to get the data on it sorted before I put the CPU under load constantly. Pics of the case will be taken tomorrow during daylight. I did get two interesting screen caps though:
-Disk Management pic
-Windows Home Server storage pool

Power usage is hovering around 215 watts. I'm very happy to have this machine finished, and not have to say that I will get more hard drives later. I have all the storage I need now, and I can add more when I need to.

Okay, that is all. Just felt like posting. :D

Hey FullMetal,

FYI, if you use the software "RAID" in Windows Home Server, it will corrupt your file system. There's an inherent bug in the FS handling. I haven't really checked up on the fix from Microsoft (a complete re-do of the FS cuz it can't be patched).

"RAID" = duplication? Really? Do you have a link or anything so I can research / read? I hadn't heard anything about it, besides the pre-PP1 issue.

The corruption bug has been fixed in powerpack 1 of Windows Home Server, I beta tested it, it will come for free to every WHS owner via Windows Update (it's already out by the way!):

The first minor release of Windows Home Server was announced today at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. Power Pack 1, formerly code named "UR1", will ship in the first half of 2008 and be made available to existing customers of Windows Home Server via Windows Update.

He was talking about the corruption with pre-PP1 and using multiple hds, correct? I had heard about that, but I didn't know if there was something new that I was missing.

I used to be into the game, but I kinda fell out of the loop a few months ago. I don't really have time anymore to follow everything I used to... even though it is my job.

No worries. Honestly, I was just worried that I missed something vital, and felt horrible that I didn't do my research. :)

Yeah, I heard the Raid problem was fixed. It took them like 8 months to fix it though. There was an Anandtech article about it some time back.

Well 5TB may be sufficient for the next 2 - 3 years ... considering the development in HDTV, 10 - 15Mpixel cameras etc...
Not quite enough considering that FMC is a mod and a Official member of the ATOT NightCrew ... ;)

hehe I forgot about that. The motherboard didn't have drivers for Server 2003 (WHS), so I was trying all different OS drivers to get stuff to work. Half of the stuff on the mobo doesn't have drivers installed, but the NIC and video card are working, so that's all I need. :D
