how does the post office know whether or not a customer is lying if he asks for a reimbursment of a lost item that is insured? I am planning to sell some parts over the internet and been wondering if this 85cents to insure $50 is really wat it says to be.

If you have insurance they issue you a tracking number. If it gets lost or damaged in the mail you can file a claim. If the package gets to where it is delivered (and yes they do keep record of this) then you can't file a lost package. It really has to be lost in order to file the claim. If it's damaged you can be reimbursed for their cost to replace it, or whatever insurance you paid for. I do believe however, that the claim has to be reported VERY quickly.
