Hmm...what do you guys think about a Xbox beowulf cluster?
Link
The Xbox is about $150 at ebgames(Link)
The CPU is a mobile Intel Celeron 733Mhz processor

What do you think?

SETI????

NO.... Don't go there...

PS2....

They first did it on a PS2. But, 150 bucks for x box and only 733 mhz PROC on a 100Mhz Bus? Esp, with SLOW Memory.. Actually the GPU is the fastest PROC in these boxes. I highly doubt that you could do more then 1 - 2 WU a day. NOW if we could all get our 9800 PRO to somhow process WU I am sure we could all be doing 10 WU a day on are ATI/Gforce cards alone!!! ;) Where as if you go to Fry's and buy a MB/CPU AMD 1800 - 2000 for 59.00 you can do about 7-9 (overclocked) all you need to buy is ram and a power supply. Flopy or Hard Drive too. But you can buy it all used for under 100 bucks. The only limitation would be POWER.... Tho if you had a big enough basement you could be the seti king for about 6K or so....

6K isn't all that expensive for even 1 computer these days. But there is even a better way to go....

I think it's a cool idea to try running other software than intended on a $-box or a PS2.

But in the end this will not really give u a fair trade for what u have put into I guess. I mean a Cely with 733 MHz is not really what I'd call a WU-killer! I have no idea how hard it is to change back from DC to the gamingstuff on the $-box, but I higly doubt it is as easy as on a PC where u just shut down the DC software and play a game or whatever.

So...

Technical nerd speaking: great thing

DC nerd speaking: not the best choice to invest money IMHO

I really hope they come out with a client to run on graphics hardware for Seti2/Astorpulse. The latest graphics chips are immensly powerful compaired to Athlons and P4s (atleast in rendering), if an efficent client could be developed utilizing all pipelines fully I could see 30-40 (or more) WUs per day comming out of a GeForceFX or Radeon. But of course thats only if they could optimize it effectivly.

Ah Yes, But the Xbox 733 mhz ... whatever. is also capable of doing 2 Gflops.. no Celeron is capable of doing that.
