OT: got my 512mb usb flash drive

I bought a 512mb flash drive off eBay Saturday and finaly recieved it today. It's pretty nice and handy, I plan on using it to transfer downloaded files from school (stupid 19.6k dial-up :|). Got it for $82.00 shipped! Go to ebay and use the search string "512mb usb flash" lots of great deals especially considering they retail for over $200.00 normaly. The seller listed it as brand new but upon inspection of the packaging I can see where the plastic was melted together and I did not have to rip it appart so the package had been opened, not too mad at him though because it looks/works perfect. BTW it's a SOYO Cig@r Pro.

Congrats on your new (sadly used, but fortunately still in good condition) purchase. 🙂

<-- has a USB CF reader, and several CF cards, as well as plenty of Zip disks, but nowhere to go to get on a broadband connection locally that will let me download stuff (the libraries are real anal about it; you have to purchase floppy disks from them, you can't even bring your own floppies, despite the fact that they run WinNT and have excellent virus protection).

I recently purchased a 32meg pen drive. This thing is cool. I can think of a lot of good uses for this. $20 is a real bargain for 32 ,$ 82 for 512 is outstanding. Drivers are built in to any windows above 98SE.

<--------------- loves cool gadgets.

By the way...LMAO!!!!!
I bet I'll die by the time I'm 20 from all of the stress in my life due to the lack of broadband...seriously its that bad.

Just consider yourself lucky you never had to live though 14.4 modems. These were the "hot" thing when I got my first PC. Then the 28.8. I then saved up money to buy a fast new 56K, and paid a lot of money at the time, only to find out that the place I was living at the time had suck old phone wires that the highest I could do was 28.8. 🙁 That was a long time ago, and I am STILL on dial up myself!

I even have a brand new line going to my computer and the best I have ever seen is 21.6 and I normaly get 19.2, running a speed test off our friends over at BBR reviels that my acctual line speed is around 14/16 🙁. Next school year I only have a computer class for 1 semester so I'll be out of luck the rest of the time. But fortunantly I will be a teachers assistant , so I'll get almost all free time.
For some reason our old 400mhz celeron routinely gets on at 28.8, and thats a 20 year old line. 😕 All I can do is wait for a wireless provider I guess. There is an ISP in my "area" that offers wireless but they arent in MY area. I could go on and on, and I do, but I guess I'll stop now.

Hey Guy's .....I'm stuck on dial-up too. Used to be with AOL & 28.8 was the best I could get, I switched to a new ISP $9.95/month unlimited, I get between 33K & 47K depending on traffic. Averarge 36to38k And I live in the backwoods of Upstate New York. I took out the internel and bought a V.92 external serial hardware modem. So it's not just the phone lines that affect the thru-put.🙂

Josh,

Your library isn't the only one with those rules.. up until just recently, the library system I work at had the same policy - we've relaxed ours to allow patrons to use their own disks, now that we have an Enterprise install of McAfee so that every machine is protected(in addition to other products on the backend at the servers/routers/firewall). Additionally, we're in the process of setting up a few Linux routers in our larger branches to allow patrons to bring in their own notebooks and use our bandwidth directly.

I have a 64meg version of that USB pen drive and I like it - though I paid a bit more than $82.00 for it when it was new - well over a 1.5 years ago. 😉 Depending on how your library's tech configurations are setup, it's likely they don't allow the use of USB devices with their equipment - we're set up with such an arrangement as we don't want the public adding in their own devices and messing with our working configurations. 😉

simply a join in convers - got a 64Meg USB Drive ($39 Mail) - fast little mother 🙂

468 MHz w/ 388 Megs SDRam/ Best Data v90 PCI 56K Mach 2 Modem (runs 50,666) with MS WINME
. . . in general - i fly around 😀 a lot on the Net with this Dial-Up . . .

ps - still have a INTEL External 14.4E Modem - one day i will test again - usually see them @ EggHeads 😉
and they're usually *Hidden* in some obscure place . . . 🙂

They run Windows NT 4, so USB devices are not going to work, even if the librarian would allow it. The libraries around here have those Gateway systems that they got for free through a Microsoft deal, so I doubt they'll be putting in any Linux routers (though that idea sounds great, I might move up to Michigan just for that 😉).

Duh! What was I thinking.. obviously not very much.. 😱

As for the Linux routers, yeah, my boss was most concerned about folks coming in and trying to hack..er, "browse" our network, so by putting a cheap box(p166) in place we can limit the notebook-toting patron's access. 😉 Still, they can come in, plug into the network(no wireless yet) and surf/download for as long as they want while the branch is open. Each of the larger branches has a full T1 available.

Check it out: Kent District Library 🙂 So far, just our Wyoming branch has this in place, but we'll be adding said access to 4 more branches over the next month or so dependent on available network drops.

Awesome! Now all I have to do is get a laptop or tablet PC and then move to MI. 😉
