Lol, no golf-ball sized hail. What happened was that it rained pretty hard, then the temperature plumetted pretty quickly and all that water froze up on everything. On my way home last Saturday night I was marveling at how cool looking the trees were with about an inch of clear ice around all the branches. It was kindof like everything turned into ice sculptures with colors inside. Was beautiful until all that extra weight started snapping the branches, which tended to fall on power lines, cars, houses, etc. I've had to have my roof patched, but I got out luckier than some of my neighbors who had their cars parked outside 😉.
As for the numbers, they are a bit staggering when you consider that Lexington only has a population of around 600K. A significant percentage of the entire town was without power. I was lucky that mine went out early, because I was one of the first to get checked into a hotel. Most were full by Sunday night. You wouldn't believe some of the stupid things people did to stay warm because they had nowhere to go. Could you imagine actually bringing your grill inside your house and firing it up for the heat it could put out? I think 40 something people had to be treated for CO poisoning. Not a few people set their houses on fire by accident as well. It was crazy.
