OT: Earthquake in North Georgia - Machines OK

It's been pretty quiet in here, figured I'd post about the rare event we had in the North Georgia area this morning. At first it was thought that the center was just Northeast of Ft Payne Alabama (Home of the Band Alambama) but latest Seismograph readings place it closer to Cloudland Canyon in Chatooga Georgia just Northwest of Rome Georgia. Initial readings were placed at 4.5 and then upgraded to 4.9.

I know, nothing compared to California but we don't get this here.

Donna and I's alarm is set for 5am and we were shaken out of bed 1 minute before the alarm. I jumped up and said Earthquake to her right away and she NO way, not here. Then the windows starting rattling and then a dull rumble through the house. It lasted at least 30 seconds varying in intensity during the time. Our animals were going crazy, 2 of cats kept going up and down the stairs.

Donna lived in California for 5 years and experienced a quake and she said the moving only lasted 5 seconds, she couldn't believe how long it lasted here. We're on Chestnut Mountain due East of the center about 100 Miles.

Edit: To make it a DC thread, the machines didn't even hiccup.

We felt it here in Knoxville, TN. I woke to the sound of perfume bottles rattling and vibrating on the dresser. Really weird! Like you said we don?t get these much around here.

I used to love the occasional earthquake while I lived in Japan 🙂

Glad nothing was damaged 🙂
I was about to post the same sort of thing about my earthquake experience in Japan. It was very common to awake to the bed swaying. Had close to a dozen in the three years I was in Japan. But, I never saw any damage.

Migroo your nuts!😉

Glad everythings ok ,a little scary though!:Q
Don't get anything like that here (thank god) ,though in the midlands they have the occasionally tremor/small Equake

I went to sleep one hour before the quake, so there was no way I was going to feel it. My machine is still cruising. Peace.

Glad to hear you (and your machines) are ok.

There was a little quake in Indiana last year down near Evansville. At first I thought it was just a nearby coal mine doing their usual thing, but then it kept going... and going... for at least 30 seconds. It was a very light quake, and fortunately nothing was damaged. Still, it was a bit freaky, having never been in a quake before, and not knowing what to expect. IIRC, there was even a thread on ATOT about it. 😉

Edit: Yes, it is here.

I know Evansville very well and like the small town a lot. I worked near the GE/Whirlpool plant when I was contracting for Cingular. Supervised and tested the installation of a new Switching Computer for the Network, the building is around the corner from that plant.

I sure miss that job, best job ever and lost it because of the *&%#$ State case.

I'm in Atlanta, and I slept right through it.....and I didn't even drink last night 😀

My younger bro lives in Ft. Payne though. I called them today and was told that they definitely were awakened.... No major damage. Actually, no minor damage. To their house, as far as they know....

They said some streets there were closed, with detours up, but they don't know why. I doubt any buildings came down, but there may have been some cracks opened up here and there. I really have no idea. Maybe just some trees fell down for all I know. But I was very happy that they were okay.

Evansville? Small? WTF are you thinking? You ain't seen nothin' until you've seen Dugger (a truly small town near where I live, with a whopping population of 900). 😉
