Depending on the machine you could very well have to go through Dell. I don't know that model but a lot of their machines use special power supplies and a normal retail ps won't work.

There are alternatives, probably all cheaper than OEM. Like Freewolf says though, they tend(ed) to use oddball PS'es and the size might be an issue. A quick search on eBay for "dell 4600 power supply" had 43 results, and Newegg might have a fitting replacement. While you're at it, you can probably up the wattage a bit as well.

Talk to dell about your machine... Dell had different pin out on some of their older machines... Unless your machine is over 2 years old I would think any off the shelf power supply would work.

Good Luck!

Pull the PS, and see if it has standard ATX wiring. If not you can easily rewire with a few simple tools--they just have a few wires switched around IIRC.

Yup true

I replaced a friends dell psu I had to push out 3 wires out of the connector and move then to the correct spots but its reletively easy to do they are held in with a clip that you just use a tooth pick or ice pick untill it clears and pull them out, then bend them back out after you put them in the right slots

Dell & Compaq are notoriously proprietary. From the size of power supplies, to blocked off pcie ports, to riveted fans & accessories.
