I just read about how some folks over at this site Linux on Dreamcast have ported linux to the dreamcast. Would it be possible to get the dreamcast w/linux to run some seti? Just a thought of a CHEAP seti cruncher...:):):)

I'd give it a shot if I had a broadband adpater... I bet the little ah heck would crunch out a couple WUs a day

How would you get the completed WU's out? Memory card to some sort of PC adaptor?

Indy,

That's why the broadband adapter... It's an ethernet card for the DC, it replaces the modem... Speaking of that, I guess you could always use the modem to dump WUs :)

It won't work. Each "page" of Dreamcast's memory card only has 128kb . Can't even store a fresh WU!
Maybe PlayStation 2 can work with its 8MB memory card??? It also has a Linux distro, but then where can we get a modem or boardband adaptor for PS2!?

No, it won't work. As far as I know, there is no Linux SH4 client for SETI@Home. You'd have to run a PC emulator such as BOCHS, which currently makes my TBird 900 perform on the level of a 486. I don't see it working, unfortunatley.

Now if only if someone could figure out how to get Xbox to run it :)

xbox would be much nicer for running it. i doubt the DC would even do 1 unit a day, but the xbox is good for 3 or so. actually, the northbridge in the xbox has data prefetch so it might be a bit faster.

I bet PlayStation2 will run SETI better with its Emotion Engine. When Engineer yells, "More.... more... more" at it;
it gets all emotional and motivated to crunch up a few extra WUs.

Well, there are a very small number of people that managed to get their hands on some of the prototype ZIP drives for DreamCast that were going to be released if the console had lived a slightly longer life. ;);););)

Why all the ;););););) s??? What are the other functions for DC Zip drives beside the obvious game saves and PSO guild cards storage? More info please :)

Well, the ZIP disks are plenty large enough to store WU's, if one were so inclined to set up their DreamCast to try and crunch SETI WU's.
