OT: Crucial says Tiger MP can only support 6 banks

They say that Tyan Tiger MP can only be stable up to 3 sticks of memory. That's news to me.😱

For a list of compatible memory modules for the Tiger MP check here (note that Crucial is not on the list). Does MT stand for Micron Technologies or something else? Also check special note 4 at the bottom of the page.

IsOs,

Actually, Tyan also recommends using only three slots (six banks).

Baldy18,

Yep, MT is Micron Technology.

Thank Russ I wasn't sure on that one.

Yep Special note 4 in my link is about the recommended number of banks to fill.

Hmm, that leaves me 2 extra sticks of 256MB of Registered DDR when I receive the replacement from Crucial.

I'll need another board for these memory. I hope these Crucial sticks are compatible with ASUS A7M266-D.

Hmm, that's news to me.. I've got a system here crunching along with all (4) 256 meg sticks working fine. 🙂

I guess my computers just love me more 'cuz I talk nicely to them and give them plenty of upgrades. :Q

2 of my Tiger MPs had 4 sticks of 256 each which started running when I first got these Tyan boards. It was only recently that I had problem with one of the stick on each batch. It was a surprised to me when I was told that I was just lucky by the Crucial people. They claim that most of the calls relating to Tiger MP was not being able to boot or install Windows with all 4 slots filled with memory.

It's a crapshoot getting it to work with all four slots filled. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I'm running mine with three right now, after frying three 256MB sticks.

Sometimes I wonder about upgrading when they have issues like this.

I wouldn't be able to afford frying mem sticks like that Russ. Not sure if they RMA that? 😀

what about a 760mpx?

i have on the way to me a couple of these that will have 2 gig of ddr reg ecc.

4 x 512 meg each.

anybody know if the same thing applies to the mpx chipset

Wolfie,

Crucial was great about it. Not only did they replace the sticks, I spent a half hour on the phone with the head of their test lab discussing issues with the Tiger MP and going over the reports they'd received from the field, and their own test results. One of the issues that he'd been seeing was a weak correlation between the Tiger MP, 3Com NICs and Crucial memory failure. Sounded far-fetched to me, but what the hell.

I swapped my 3Com for an Intel Pro/100 on December 11 last year, and haven't fried a stick since.

I don't have 3 COM NIC on the 2 Tiger MPs that recently killed these mem sticks. Come to think of it, about 1 1/2 month ago, I had a bad mem stick on the first time I installed 1 256MB in one of my Tiger MP.🙁

I'll leave them at 3 sticks max for now.

Thanks

This is the same thing that has happened to me. I was only using 3 sticks, and my NIC is not a 3Com either...🙁

Well, I'm using a 3Com 10/100 nic(3C905) with no problems.. however, I'm also not using Crucial ram though either - all four of my sticks are made by Samsung. 😉

There have been so many reports of Tiger MP's frying Crucial RAM I wonder why we still find it surprising. My advise is don't take the risk, get your RAM from a different company for your Tiger MP.
